[2025-01-18 image ©ATIS] The headline on a recent article in lightreading, the International Editor claimed that "No One in the Real World Cares About 5G Stand Alone" Is he right?
When 5G was first set up in the UK it was implemented as 5GNR (New Radio) or 5GNSA (Not Stand Alone); which basically it meant that thee wireless bit was 5G but the backhaul wad through the 4G backhaul. Only now, some 5 years after 5G was first installed are we getting 5GSA (Stand Alone) meaning that the backhaul uses a seperate 5G backhaul which is faster than the 4G backhaul.
The implication in the headline is - do we really need 5GSA? It is true that 5G has had a poor press, users of mobile phones only saw limited improvement when using 5G,NR if indeed there is any improvement and there is a belief that it is no better than 4G. Again most mobile customers do not have a need for faster communications. It is nice to have the web page load a bit faster, or a video lod faster but the speed is not really an issue. I, am not screaming out for a faster network, as I was when 4G was introduced. What I, and many others are screaming out for is coverage. We want good 4G or 5G coverage over the whole of the UK, or at least places where we visit.
One major issue for 5G (either NR or SA) is that there is no killer 5G app. No app that needs 5G; cannot work with 4G. There is none and none soon to appear over the horizon. Hence that headline - we are not screaming for 5GSA, 4G does just fine.
The 5GSA supporters in the industry claim that 5GSA will be a benefit to business with much improved IoT or Real-Time applications. Whilst 5GSA may give benefits to business the consumer does not see much. We will not need 5GSA to get our smart energy meters to work (the upgrades from 2G are using 4G). the real-time app we see in the press most often is self driving cars which do not need 5GSA.
In 4 years 6G will be available; given that 5GSA is not really seen as needed ,will the mobile operators rush to build 6G at great cost but little increase in revenue.
[Finally just a note that O2 keep publicising that they have installed 5GSA in another area of the UK - it sees O2 still have faith in the technology]
