Fact #10
I look up synonyms A LOT.
Some notes from the talk I watched of Scott Berkun on creative thinking.
Where I have drawn a dark square are ideas that I would like to work on specifically or things that I already do that could do with a little improvement!
The Welcome Collection.
Went and saw the permanent exhibitions at the Welcome Collection, both were right up my street - medical based, abstract and experimental. Some of the pieces I recognised but many I had not seen before and there was a strong historical section of the exhibit which was unusual. I think the most interesting thing was I viewed the exhibition with someone with a strong academic background and who is slightly squeamish, this gave me a different view on many of the pieces as I was more able to view them in a different way, and appreciate more the ‘bloody’ or ‘fleshy’ nature of some exhibits. The exhibits were interesting as well as very thought provoking and introduced me to more artists/designers that are exploring areas I would hope to experiment with in the future.
Watch a film in an art cinema or gallery
During my last few weeks at Plymouth College of Art, I had the opportunity to witness some of the amazing work completed by the degree students. Amongst the variety of impressive projects the BA (Hons) Graphic Design students produced, there was one piece particularly attracted my attention. The piece ‘Changing Perspectives’ by third year student Allie Couch was not only beautifully filmed but also portrayed a powerful message, targeting the audiences emotions. The short film/ video was created to challenge people’s perspectives on physical disabilities though moving image. “Having a disability is a life-changing experience, but it doesn’t always have to be a negative one”. Taking place in an abandoned market hall, the camera travels around the space to encounter fun and interactive typography that challenges the stigma associated with disability. Allie’s work highlights that many people overcome their disabilities and go on to redefine the boundaries of ability, achieving amazing things.
Whilst watching the piece, I was automatically drawn by the create way in which it was executed. Something I found intriguing about this piece was the various courageous angles it was filmed at; I think this corresponds with the idea of ‘changing perspectives’ and breaking the barriers. I feel that pieces which challenge conventions are the most exciting. I thought the song was uplifting and powerful which complemented the piece wonderfully as the message of the film was just that. Utilising the warehouse where it was filmed, I think Allie managed to make the viewing experience so good through the use of strong colours. i.e the scene with the balloons and the scene with the colourful balls rolling down the steps. I liked that she was adventurous with this project and used a variety of mediums to create it. Overall, I think this film is one of the most memorable graduate pieces I have witnessed and I think it is a perfect example of ‘thinking outside the box’.
I have posted the link down below, I would definitely recommend watching.
