Pick one of the following: Violence can be a reasonable response to an unreasonable situation.” OR “Portraying people with disabilities in entertainment media is unfair.”  Argue your view in two paragraphs on one of these topics. Use examples from the book and personal opinions to support your ideas.

“Portraying people with disabilities in entertainment media is unfair.”

I chose to talk about this quote, and I have two main things to talk about. It really depends on the way you look at the quote, and I see it in two ways. First way being that using these people as a side of entertainment as in hurting that certain person’s feelings. This is definitely disagreed by myself because people in general should never be used as this side of entertainment because this causes them to feel bad about themselves, and them to feel worthless. Especially people who are suffering from certain disabilities. This only makes them feel worst. These people never chose to be born this way, so respecting them is definitely the right thing to do. Or the least, to support them and tell them that being disabled shouldn’t come in the way of their dreams and goals that they want to achieve in life. And this is the second way that I see this quote. 

The second way is using these people as examples to motivate and inspire the people that are slowly giving up. We can show them that being disabled, or suffering from certain problems shouldn’t stop anything or anyone from following and chasing their dreams. For example, Christopher is suffering from Asperger Syndrome, and he didn’t let that come in his way at all. He did what he liked, and what he was interested in, like being a detective and writing a mystery book. He had trouble doing that because writing this book needs interaction with people, and this is something Christopher can’t do. But, he still did it in the end, and got what he wanted. In the end, I think it really depends on the way you see this quote, and if it means my first explanation, then I disagree, but if it’s the second, then I agree.

Isolation

Christopher shows a lot of isolation in the novel.

The first example is when Christopher says he wants to be an astronaut because he would be in a tiny spacecraft thousands of miles away from the Earth and that he likes small spaces. This shows isolation because it shows that Christopher likes being far away from people and likes being alone which would make him a good astronaut. 

The second example is when Christopher states that it was nice being in the police cell when he got arrested. This shows isolation because it explains to us that Christopher likes being separated from the world instead of being social with other people.

The third example is when Christopher didn’t want to go to the park with Mrs. Alexander because he never goes to the park with strangers or likes to be around them and says that he wanted to go home, feed Toby, and practice some maths. This shows isolation because it tells us that Christopher doesn’t like being around strangers and prefers to be alone is his room practicing math.

Christopher prefers to be alone, but knows he’s unable take care of himself on his own

There is a contradiction in this because even though Christopher likes to be isolated and segregated from people, he can’t take care of himself. Not being able to take care of himself means needing the help of people which in Christopher’s case is not his favorite thing to do. Due to this Christopher needs other people’s help. An example of the kind of help Christopher needs is that Christopher needs his father to take care of him and give him food. Another example is that Christopher needs Siobhan to explain things that Christopher finds illogical or hard to understand like what people mean by their facial expressions and how to understand them.

Why is Christopher okay with touching animals but not humans

Christopher is okay with touching animals but not humans because Christopher understands how animals feel and can identify their emotions unlike humans. Christopher also things that animals are honorable and trustworthy but doesn’t believe that about humans. In conclusion Christopher is okay with touching animals but not humans because to Christopher it’s easy to understand animals’ motives and feelings but with humans it’s difficult to understand their facial expressions and emotions.

Isolation:

This theme sums up Christopher’s position. Christopher always tries to isolate himself from the outside world. He’s always in his own world where he understands himself. And that is all due to him having “Asperger’s Syndrome.” Christopher finds it difficult to interact with the people around him. He doesn't understand how is he supposed to react to certain things. This puts him in a hard situation, giving him a good reason to be “Isolated.” We can tell from the story “The Curious Incident Of the Dog In The Night Time.” That Christopher likes himself being Isolated, since he says in one of the parts, 

“It was nice in the jail cell.” 

In the call, he was obviously alone. Surrounded by walls, and not packed with people, like where he spends everyday of his life. Christopher also shows that he prefers to spend time alone, than with people, since he doesn’t do what everyone does. 

I think that Christopher prefers communicating with animals more than people, because they are whom he understands, He knows that a certain action coming from the animal means a certain thing. He finds animals easier to understand than he sees in people.

Violence can be a reasonable response to an unreasonable situation

I disagree with this statement. Violence should never be the answer. When someone is aggressive and violent towards you, the proper response is nonviolence. This is the only way to make sure you have the legal and upper hand.

We could all live more in peace if there wasn't wars and violence all around the world to worry about. We need to talk, to compromise to make things better. it's true that sometimes you want to hurt someone because they angered you. But, you can always punish them without the need of hurting them. Violence is not the answer, but it is an option that you don't necessarily have to choose.

when Christopher father was angry with his son he grabbed him very hard which scared Christopher and due to that Christopher hit his father, I think this would never happen if Christopher's father talked to him and didn't grab him the way he did. I do realize that I just wrote a whole paragraph about violence is never the answer, but in Christopher's case it was different he was scared and lost he had no idea what was going on, so he reacted by hitting his father.

in conclusion, I'd say that instead of using violence against anyone or anything you should try talking to them, understand things from their perspective or from their point of view. that would help you more than using violence.

Isolation

“Sometimes when I want to be on my own I get into the airing cupboard in the bathroom and slide in beside the boiler and pull the door behind me and sit there and think for hours and it makes me feel very calm”

This shows isolation because Christopher likes to isolate himself from everything happening around him and just keep to himself. He feels calmer when he is on his own.

“I didn't speak to anyone and for the whole afternoon I sat in the corner of the Library groaning with my head pressed into the join between the two walls and this made me feel calm and safe.”

This shows that Christopher likes to isolate himself and just never speak to anyone. We can infer that Christopher feels anxious around people and that he likes to isolate himself to stay calm.

“I knew that it meant "happy”[...] or when I am still awake at three or four in the morning and I can walk up and down the street and pretend that I am the only person in the world.”

This quote shows that Christopher feels happier when he is isolated from the world and prefers to stay that way as he explains that he wishes to be the only person left on Earth. 

Christopher wants to be isolated but he can’t take care of himself:

i agree that there is a contradiction simply because Christopher prefers to be isolated though he his incapable of taking care of himself. his disability is the number one reason why he likes to be isolated but also can’t take care of himself. he needs people like Siobhan and Father to do the simple things in life for him.

Why does Christopher not mind dogs?

I think Christopher prefers dogs on humans because he understands them and knows what they mean. I also think that since dogs don't really give responses to Christopher it is still like being isolated.

Isolation.

“It was nice in the police cell.” Chapter 23 

You never usually hear someone saying that it’s ‘nice’ in a police cell, however Christopher says that because he enjoys being alone in his own space. Christopher says that because he’s alone, in an enclosed space, and he was in a situation that he was familiar with from TV, which are some of the few things Christopher values.

"I was nervous. I did not know Mrs. Alexander. I knew that she was an old lady and that she liked dogs. But she was a stranger. And I never go into the park on my own because it is dangerous and people inject drugs behind the public toilets in the corner. I wanted to go home and go up to my room and feed Toby and practice some maths.” Chapter 97

Christopher hates going out into public places and mixing with people, especially not with a stranger. He just wants to go back home, away from people, in his room, alone and do what he enjoys.

 “I think I would make a very good astronaut. To be a good astronaut you have to be intelligent and I’m intelligent. You also have to understand how machines work and I’m good at understanding how machines work. You also have to be someone who would like being on their own in a tiny space-craft thousands and thousands of miles away…” Chapter 83

This quote shows that Christopher values being alone, because he says that to be an astronaut you need to enjoy being on your own. He says that him enjoying being alone fits perfectly with becoming an astronaut and it qualifies him to be a good astronaut.

Christopher prefers to be alone, but knows he’s unable to take care of himself on his own.

Yes, I think there’s a contradiction in this because Christopher prefers isolation and enjoys being alone, but he can’t take care of himself due to his condition. His condition doesn’t allow him to be independent and it limits him from doing many things. Therefore, Christopher needs to work hard to overcome his adversity to be able to be independent.

Why is Christopher okay with touching animals, but not humans?

Christopher mentions a couple of times that he prefers animals over humans, because he doesn’t like people. He hates being touched by people and it’s not fine with him. But he is fine with touching animals because he says that animals are not as confusing as humans and they have simple emotions that can be easily figured out. Hence he’s okay with touching animals, and not humans.

Violence is never the answer.

“Violence can be a reasonable response to an unreasonable situation.”

I completely disagree with this quote because violence is never the answer, no matter what the situation is. Violence is not responsible and it creates more problems rather than solve them, and can cause more trouble. Violence is not in favor of anyone in a situation and it certainly doesn’t make things better. I also believe that if you use violence as a solution, that will only get the other side to react back with violence, which won't lead to anything, but make the situation worse.

However, I think the only exception is if you want to use violence to defend yourself, friends or family from harm. Because it’s unreasonable to cause yourself harm just because you don’t want to use violence. Generally speaking, violence is never the answer and it’ll get you nowhere.

Portraying people with disabilities in entertainment media is unfair

This is 100 percent true. Making fun of people’s disability shouldn’t be considered as an “entertainment,” that's one. Two, people with those disabilities are already insecure about what they have to go through, and people are adding humiliation. This is just making them feel worst. In any sort of entertainment, if it will hurt the person’s feelings in the end, then this is where the unfairness comes. Those people never chose to be like this, It is how they were born. Doing such thing like using people with disabilities as a side of entertainment is called being lifeless, and childish. A child will even understand better. Doing that, is also meaning you being rude to that person. 

Though, portraying people as in inspiring others, and showing them that its okay to be disabled, then you are being useful and spreading positivity. Instead of just wasting time by being rude, you can show people that being disabled dosent mean anything. You can always achieve your goals, dosent matter in which situation you stand.
