The curious incident of the dog at the night time present different themes such as overcoming adversity. Another theme that is portrayed in the story is isolation. This theme is mostly showed through Christopher, his actions and words. We can see that Christopher has a problem with communication with others because he can’t understand them and find them very complicated. This causes Christopher to stay away from them and isolate himself from the world.
There are several examples that shows this theme throughout the story. Some of the examples are:
Math is a way of isolation:
a. “Mr. Jeavons said I liked maths because it was safe. He said I liked maths because because it meant solving problems, and these problems were always difficult and interesting but there was always a straightforward answer at the end. And what he meant was that maths wasn’t like life because in life there are no straightforward answers at the end. I know he meant this because this is what he said. This is because Mr. Jeavons doesn’t understand numbers. (P61)”
b. “And when I opened my eyes the policeman was reading a newspaper called The Sun, and on the front of the paper it said £3m Anderson’s Call Girl Shame and it had a picture of a man and a picture of a lady in a bra underneath. And then I did some maths practice in my head, solving quadratic equations using the formula. (161)”
We can see through this quotes that Christopher finds it easier to deal with math than people. Math helped Christopher through the story, and it was used as an example of overcoming adversity. Throughout the story we notice that Christopher do math and practice it every day and whenever he feels like it which is quite a few times a day. Math is part of Christopher life that it starts becoming more important to him that communicating with the other people. The example with the policeman in the train station is a strong example that shows that if Christopher had a choice between speaking to people and doing math, he would choose doing math. When Christopher sees the policeman reading newspaper he doesn’t attempt to ask any questions or even start a conversation with him, instead he stay seated in his place and start doing some math inside his head. This example shows that Christopher is isolating himself from others by doing math.
Comfort in police station:
a. “It was nice in the police cell. (P14)”
b. I stepped outside. Father was standing in the corridor. He held up his right hand and spread his fingers out in a fan. I held up my left hand and spread my fingers out in a fan and we made our fingers and thumbs touch each other. We do this because sometimes Father wants to give me a hug, but I do not like hugging people, so we do this instead, and it means that he loves me. (P16).
c. “Sometimes when I want to be on my own I get into the airing cupboard in the bathroom and slide in beside the boiler and pull the door behind me and sit there and think for hours and it makes me feel very calm. (P50)”
Police station is one of the last places that any person would want to be in because it is a scary place where their freedom is taken away from them. However that doesn’t seem to be the case with Christopher, he describes the police cell as a nice place to be in. He also shows that when that in prison which can be described as one of the loneliest places, Christopher seems to be comfortable that he is able to talk about love and how his dad shows it to them. The last support Christopher the fact that Christopher like isolation because it tells about he like to stay in places alone and just think about different things and that’s helps him to find comfort. In other words, Christopher is most comfortable in places where there is less number of people and where he can stay alone and think or do whatever he want.
a. “I knew that it meant "happy," like when I'm reading about the Apollo space missions, or when I am still awake at three or four in the morning and I can walk up and down the street and pretend that I am the only person in the world. (P2)”
b. “I like imagining that I am there sometimes, in a special metal submersible with windows that are 30 cm thick to stop them from imploding under the pressure. And I imagine that I am the only person inside it, and that it is not connected to a ship at all but can operate under its own power and I can control the motors and move anywhere I want to on the seabed and I can never be found. (P80)”
This two quotes that proves that Christopher really like to be isolated from others that he always imagine himself being alone and without any person. Christopher seems to desire the disappearance of everyone around him and just wanting to stay by himself doing things that he didn’t have the chance to do, rather incapable of doing around others. We can also sense how peaceful and relaxed he is when fantasizing about his dreams of being the only person left on this world. This example strongly shows the isolation in the book.
Christopher prefers to be alone, but knows he’s unable take care of himself on his own. Is there a contradiction here?
Yes there is a clear contradiction that is shown through this. Christopher dream and desire is to be alone and isolated from others around him, but he is unable to that because he need someone to take of him. Christopher admits that by saying “then, when I've got a degree in Maths, or Physics, or Maths and Physics, I will be able to get a job and earn lots of money and I will be able to pay someone who can look after me and cook my meals and wash my clothes, or I will get a lady to marry me and be my wife and she can look after me so I can have company and not be on my own.” Christopher is a person with Asperger’s syndrome which means he has a problem in communication with others and so he needs someone who is able to take care of him all the time. Christopher also has a problem with dealing with many things at once which cause him to have a break down and start hitting others which is another reason why he can’t be alone. I think Christopher dreams about being alone because he is aware that he unable to do that.
Why is Christopher okay touching animals, but not humans?
Christopher has Asperger’s syndrome, and one of its affects is that he doesn’t like to be touched by other humans. However, as it was showed when Christopher hugged Willington, he is fine with touching animals. The reason to that is that Christopher believes that animals has simple feelings and emotions that allows him to understand them, unlike human being. To Christopher, it is easier to deal with animals that humans that’s why he is fine with touching them.
