In the throne room scene in 5x03, Arthur demonstrates that the hard earned lessons from season 4 are sticking. He can't rule alone. He needs others. He trusts others who have shown their worth.

These are lessons Merlin unlearns in season 5. Merlin believes the repeated advice that Emrys alone can save Arthur and alter his fate. He isolates himself and thrusts others away, even Arthur. He doesn't trust Gwaine enough to confide in him after years of loyalty. As his power rises, Merlin trusts only himself, lives in fear of Arthur's death, and only hastens it.

They are two sides of the same coin, looking always in opposite directions.
