Why did they make Usnavi fix the fridge in film? It ruins the through line of the fridge metaphor which I quite liked.
At the start of both the play and the film Usnavi is a street light choking on the heat, metaphorically but also literally because his fridge is broke which is a big deal for the store.
Later in the musical, Sonny fixes the fridge and announces it in a way Usnavi doesn’t originally appreciate (his attention on the soda Sonny has taken without permission) and Abuela points out what Sonny has done for Usnavi.
Then at the end of the musical Usnavi is set to leave for PR after the death of Abeula (same in the movie? idk I never finished it I got distracted and mad about paciencia y fae missing) and is only convinced to stay after Sonny commissions a portrait of Abuela for the awning of the store from Graffiti Pete. Again Usnavi is initially frustrated with Sonny’s actions (associated with Graffiti Pete) but the reveal of Abuela makes Usnavi realize what Sonny’s done for him, echoing the moment with the fridge earlier in the musical.
After the reveal of the new awning, Usnavi has a complete change of heart about what he wants and decides to stay and keep the store to help support and nuture the community and culture Abuela was such a big part of. At this point during the finale, Usnavi proudly announces that he may be a street light, but he’s chilling in the heat.
Why is he chilling? Because Sonny has fixed his fridge again, only in a less literal fashion this time. To make Usnavi fix his own literal fridge in the movie completely destroys this and we remove both these moments that underscore it’s the community that’s important here, the interplay between people that makes things work in harmony and shows that everyone has something to contribute.
Some stupid and self indulgent cross stitch patterns I’ve come up with. Stitched one of them so far, might do some of the others but I’ve got a back log of stuff from @shitpostsampler ‘s to work my way through to complete my necromancy set.
The always hydrate after doing a capitalism quote was taken from one of the flash cards in an F.D Signifier video cause I’ve been binge watching those.
I want that day back. I want to be nine again and be told, Nomi: someday you'll be gone, you'll be dust and then even less than dust. Nothing. There's no other place to be. This world is good enough for you because it has to be. Go ahead and love it.
I’ve often wondered why we say ‘you’ve caught a cold’. I mean, no one I ever knew went out after a cold. And I’ve certainly never heard of anyone going cold chasing. It seems to me to make more sense to say the cold’s caught you.
Things What I Noticed Are Different: Be More Chill Edition
A Non exhaustive list of things I’ve noticed are different between the book and the musical versions of Be More Chill for funsies with the caveat that I’ve only listened and read about the musical, not gotten to watch it, I’m also not counting physical appearances cause actors. I’ve just put these in the order I’m thinking of them so have fun with that. This got very far away from me soooo cut
