I watched all of Thunderbolt Fantasy with @leafbladie thanks to the magic of rabb.it and it was pretty great!
For those not in the know about Thunderbolt Fantasy, well, you know Gen Urobuchi? Writer of my favourite anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica? Yeah, Thunderbolt Fantasy is a puppet show written by him.
It’s a pretty straightforward story, something Urobuchi’s quite fond of in the 2 works of his I’m familiar with, though where its strengths really lay is in the characters. In typical Urobuchi fashion, they’ve all got very distinct personalities, ideologies, and philosophies, all of which the show does a great job at highlighting and contrasting and whatnot. All of the characters talk in ways completely unique to themselves, so you can read any sentence out of context and usually be able to tell who said it, and every characters’ individual ideology and philosophy plays into every action and decision the make, which is wonderful. Plus in typical Urobuchi fashion we’ve got wonderful clashes of ideologies galore.
As I already said, it’s a pretty straightforward story – it’s all pretty standard Eastern fantasy, with deadly demon monsters and the way of the sword and characters all being famous (or infamous) and having cool titles to reflect their status, such as Screaming Phoenix Killer or Enigmatic Gale. It’s all pretty fun stuff and the story is pretty easy to follow. Well actually because the names the characters say and the names shown in the subs are different on Crunchyroll and also since I know literally nothing of the Taiwanese language I can’t tell what’s what when it comes to names in that language there were definitely moments where I wasn’t completely sure what was going on but that’s all down to ignorance on my part and thus isn’t even a criticism really.
Ultimately though, I think the series’ greatest strength is in its puppetry. If you’ve never seen it, or you’ve never seen Taiwanese puppetry, I’m sure you’ve got an image in your mind of what this show might look like, and your image is wrong. The show doesn’t look like that. It looks so much better. Other than the pretty stiff facial expressions, all of the character movement looks really hecking good, and it’s wild to me how creative this show gets with its directing. I’ve seen several TV anime that don’t even attempt to use camera angles in the same way Thunderbolt Fantasy did, which is just wild. Some fight scenes have a bit too much cuts to really make out exactly what’s going on, but everything is otherwise splendid. The visuals are nothing short of amazing.
If you find yourself with the time, give Thunderbolt Fantasy a watch. You’ll pretty much be wowed by the visuals the entire time, but having a solid narrative with well written characters on top? What more could you want? Also Urobuchi haters don’t worry the show’s not really dark tbh, it’s even got some comedy in it throughout that never feels out of place.
I wanted to get this review out the same day I watched the show so all the stuff was fresh on my mind, but that also means I didn’t watch the special or any of season 2. I’ll do that though. I might save season 2 until it’s over actually, because marathoning it was pretty fun.
This right here!!!!!! 👏👏👏👏
I'll take "What is 'We Been Knew'?" for 500, please. I don't always see eye to eye with this girl, but she ain't wrong. Thanks for submitting!

I’ve been in residential now for 3.5 days (since Tuesday) and it’s definitely getting a little bit easier, though it’s still super super hard.
Yesterday was honestly just a disaster. I think I supplemented my entire lunch, half of my dinner, and half of my afternoon snack. I don’t even remember the details. I was having self-harm urges all afternoon. There isn’t anything to SH with of course, everything is locked away, but I’m contracted to let them know when I’m having urges...so I did. They gave me a frozen orange to hold. Anyways, later we had group outside, and I was sitting on the ground, and I was yet again feeling self-harm urges (or they never really went away). I fought my urges to scrape my knuckles against the ground for most of the group, but about halfway through the group, I gave in, and I fucked up my knuckle. After group, I told my therapist (who was leading the group), and we talked. And I also told the nurse and got a bandaid. Today my therapist brought me a stress ball to hold onto in groups..how sweet is that?
Anyways, today has been a lot better. I still supplemented at lunch, but I really really challenged myself beyond my comfort zone regardless. It was 2 slices of pita bread with bree(?) and ham(?). I took one bite, and was overwhelmed by the flavor of the meat, so I pulled the meat off all of one of the slices. The bree was honestly equally overwhelming, but it was less of a taste thing and more of a texture thing, so I just tried to stick it out and eat it, and I survived. After I finished the one slice, I managed to eat the other slice with the ham still on it, even though it was really scary. I had boost for the last bit of ham that I had picked off, but otherwise it went well.
I did have a little meltdown in the hallway/foyer yesterday when I asked the dietitian if she could help me with my menu (bc I freaked last night and the RC took it away from me) and I asked her if I could switch to the vegetarian diet (so many unfamiliar scary textures!!!) and she said no. But an RC (recovery coach) talked with me for a while, and I calmed down.
I just found out (as I was typing this) that the girl I’ve become closer with is leaving...um RIGHT NOW...so I’m gunna go now so I can say bye.
Ich wandel auf dem Gedankenstrich
fühl' mich dabei fast widerlich
Es geht mir bang und banger
Ich bin gedankenschwanger
Dabei spür ich gleich deine
Und auch mei' Gebeine

des Richtens und des Henkens
hinab in tiefste Tiefen
aus denen dereinst riefen

Vergangen in dem Wahn
