So... We Put Out Some Songs...
I remember watching a Louis CK interview where he talks about his writing process. He takes his best joke, the joke he plans on closing his set with and moves it to the front forcing him to write better following material. He does this over and over until he has 60 minutes worth of solid material. We decided to follow suit. We would release the best songs we had now without any safety net of a project to follow. It would force us to push and create more inching us into a “show and prove” situation.
LVL UP
The uncredited features that really make the song. Lucas crooning in the background of the chorus and the build up. Kelz delivering the chorus unashamedly and with conviction.
BAY OF PIGS
Produced by my good friend Ben Yang. It’s hard for me to even put to words how incredible this beat is; when he sent it to us our jaws dropped. It was wild to see how Crimson keeps up with playful syncopated percussion and electronic elements. The drop in verse two gets me amped every time and the crowd loses their collective marbles when the second verse sneaks in.
COLLAGE
This is actually the second song we worked on together and also the first song for Crimson singing and doing his own harmonies. As for me, I was grateful that the horns and drums hit the way they did. It was a first for me at keeping things so open and spacious. Recently it’s a sound that I have committed to, but when Collage was produced, it was a new soundscape I was exploring.
Featured by the 8Pounds blog. They had a great write up and were extremely supportive the entire month we were putting out songs.
EARTHQUAKE
My favorite song from this batch of releases. No form. No verses. No choruses. Composed entirely by someone I look up to regularly… Kelz. I sent him the a cappella because the original beat I did was boring and Kelz gave the song spirit. I can’t show him enough love.
Also, it was great to see a popular hiphop Soundcloud channel pick it up and bring a little more exposure to the tune. ( https://soundcloud.com/hip-hop/crimson-earthquake-prod-by-ethnikids )

The song was called “WuTang Demo” for months. He played me "bring da ruckus" by Wu Tang and told me he wanted something with that feel. I grabbed some strings done by Kyle Tesalona for a remix we did, re-pitched and re-sequenced snippets, and bent the notes to give it a triumphant call to action. I threw that over some drums sampled from an old vinyl, chopped up some horn samples from Ben Yang, and then you have the ending.
The beginning tho…haha. Me just trying to continue to marry dark spacious tones and unique percussion.
But… let’s not avoid the real reason this song is so beautiful. Versailles the Everything. She killed it! Some of those lines only took one take! And the harmonies were completely improvised. She is that gorgeously talented.
The song was premiered on DJBooth.net which is Crimson’s second feature on the site. They have always been really supportive of progressive hiphop and EthniKids. Gotta send a huge thanks their way.
So there it is. We've opened up with some of our best material. Now, it’s time to “show and prove.”
PS: Big big shout out to Stess the Emcee who created all the artwork for each single. Make sure you guys reach out to him and show him some love on Twitter .

"...an invariable fundamental unit."- 201 Days
8 pounds. 8 pounds of promise. 8 pounds of proof.
That’s all it took to get back on board. Stepping on that scale and seeing 8 pounds go missing is among the singularly most gratifying experiences in my life.
Saturday - Hard
Sunday - Super Hard
Monday - Marginal
Tuesday - the Worst
Wednesday - Painful
Thursday - Pretty awesome, actually
Friday - 8 pounds!!!!!!
A 2-liter and a can of crisco. A Chihuahua and three Guinea Pigs. Five DVD copies of “Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement”. Two boxes of wine and two packages of bacon. Half of a bowling ball. Two Ostrich Eggs. Four Dozen Krispy Creme Donuts and two packages of butter. Hell, 8 freekin’ packages of butter!
I couldn’t be more renewed.
I’m on my way!
