xFIRSTBORNx - The untold story

Pete Wentz has been a bit more open about his time in the Chicago hardcore scene as of late, giving a great interview in the Antimatter Zine with Texas is the Reason frontman Norman Brannon. However, he mostly speaks about his inspirations and general presence in the scene. What about the bands that came before Arma Angelus? These bands were very poorly documented, so FOBAT decided to begin researching them.

We hope you all enjoy the new format for posts. We’re trying out new things in hopes that it catches onto the algorithm a bit more. Tell us us what you like and don’t like. And yes, Joey speaking here- I know I need a microphone… I’ll get around to it!

all media mentioned in pete wentz’s blogs, 2001-2015 (this post is 2001, reblogs are later years!)

heyyy! so, i’m starting a project where i’m collecting all the media (music, movies, etc.) from pete wentz’s blogspots & livejournals. which sounds slightly insane. it’s currently under construction, but i’ve done 2001; if you want to track my progress the document link is here, but i’ll reblog this post with more detailed updates! also, please comment on the doc if you notice any mistakes, cause i’m definitely no historian! i just love internet & music history so i’m loving doing this :3c

sooo, for 2001 there was a lot of bands mentioned, mainly those he played shows with (as part of both arma angelus and fall out boy) but also some he was inspired by/listening to. apart from michael jackson, the cure and slipknot, this playlist has some real forgotten & hidden gems of the scene! the playlist is here, and the list of artists will be right at the bottom. for the playlist though i added what would have been the mentioned artist’s latest release at the time (with some exceptions i noted in the doc), plus obviously any albums and songs specifically mentioned.

also mentioned was “unrestrained” magazine and “hanging like a hex” fanzine, both of which as far as i know were fairly niche but some archived versions can be found online. archives also exist of the websites superherohq.com & armaangelus.com on the wayback machine. loyola radio station was referenced too but i didn’t really do much digging there, it might be the university radio or it might not be, i’m unsure. either way i assumed there wouldn’t be much content regarding either arma angelus or fob, just felt it was worth mentioning.

for films, i’m expecting more to appear in later years, but the only one mentioned was lord of the rings (which based on the year was almost certainly “fellowship of the ring”). i’ve started a letterboxd list (this will include films from all years, compared to the playlists which had to be split for length) but it’s literally one movie so far sooo…..

Also finally noticed after listening to this record for 25 years that this song recycles a riff from "By The Throat" which is on their first album. Weirdly, this song is not on all versions of The Rebel Sound Of Shit And Failure. It's on the original CD i got, not on the vinyl LP i bought years later, also not on the version available on bandcamp. Checking discogs, it's on some reissues and not on others. Weird. Anyway, it's prob my favorite Born Against track. Listen loud.
