The curse of growing up in the 90s and being conditioned by the song Electric Boogie and then living in the era of electric cars, is that every time someone says "It's electric" my first immediate response is to think "boogie woogie woogie"
Shout-out to slash fanfiction writers.
When I was a teenager there was only a fraction of the LBGTQ+ representation that we have today, in the media.
As a gay teen who wouldn't have the confidence to come out for over a decade, I liked to get lost in fantasy.
I loved the X-Men, and the A-Team, and Star Trek. And I liked to relate to some of the characters. But none of the characters were like me.
I especially wanted to be Gambit, with his agility and charm and casual arrogance.
I even bought myself the long coat, and coloured contact lenses in my twenties.
But back to my teens: I used to buy the comic book series title Wolverine & Gambit - it wasn't specifically a collaboration, more of a collection of their individual runs. But every now and then there was a joint adventure, and I found myself secretly wishing the two characters would... You know... Kiss. And stuff.
Anyway, I assumed I must be the only weirdo in the universe who would want to see that.
Until we got the internet.
In the late nineties, when you still had to connect via screeching dial-up, on a family computer, I *somehow* (don't ask how; I honestly can't remember) came across the once-magnificent fanfiction dot net. And there I discovered that I was not alone in my fantasy.
People had written stories about Gambit and Wolverine!
I used to save the files on a 3.5" floppy, and kept them for years.
Fanfiction gave me the representation that society was not yet ready to offer.
Here we are twenty odd years later and there are gay characters in practically every show I watch, but I will always be grateful to the fanfic authors who continue to take characters I relate to and write the "what if they were gay?" stories.
Thank you
Thank you
A thousand times, thank you
So... I am actually really obsessed with the film the Minus Man, and I may end up writing a lengthy analysis on its subversion of genre and conventional expectations...
So frustrated about the lack of content for this hidden 90s gem.
“does not play real cassettes” this is a TRAVESTY and i will not stand for it
When the last of the past fades...
Not sure how old those of you out there are, or what fandoms you follow. But, for anyone who followed the fanfiction rise and fall of Gundam Wing, this is a sad week. Gundam Wing Addiction (gwaddiction.com) is currently suspended, possibly due to rights on the domain finally just running out.
As we move forward into new digital frontiers, we leave behind us a long trail of broken links, empty forums, and literature lost to the dead pixels of time. It’s a weirdly sobering thought...
... and it’s way past my bed time. I should probably sleep.
I'm thinking that it was really messed up being 12 years old and having to wake up around 4am so I could quickly eat a Toaster Strudel and get on the school bus around 6:30am.
Oh my age? That would be "got IDed yesterday wooooh"
