there were narrative openings for tommy at every fucking turn.

where were the flying lesson dates with buck? where were the muay thai vent sessions with eddie? where were the movie nights with chim (and maddie and buck)? where were the queer character hangouts with henren or the queer clubs with buck? where was the checking of the weird noise athena's car was making at a 118 bbq? where was buck showing tommy how to cook? where was the mornings/evenings in bed or cuddling on the couch? where was buck visiting tommy at work? where was crossing paths on calls?

s8 should have ended with the cliffhanger of Buck leaving - despite chim trying to guilt-trip him into staying, trapping him. Buck should have taken a leave of absence when his transfer was denied and instead of house hunting we should have seen him hit the road for places unknown..

but since that's not what we got: the start of s9 should have buck not at the 118 / finally leaving after the opening disaster.

either he's already working elsewhere or he finally gets his transfer approved by going over chim's head (hell, maybe gerrard approved it) so he can have the time away that he needs.

because it's not fair that bobby had time away in a new location after resigning and eddie had time away in a familiar location after injury and hen studied to be a doctor..

meanwhile: buck is desperate to deal with his grief and get away from people treating him poorly, with history of wanting to get off the damn hamster wheel and figure out what he really wants - with tim saying as much too - and yet.

s9 has a chance to fix this and finally let buck be his own person - rather than continue having his feelings and choices belittled and ignored by his found family, treated like a kid and not the adult he's grown to be.

time and space will be good for everyone but crucially allow Buck to settle in himself more fully, give opportunity for those new friendships he wants, give us different locations and characters, and develop buck's storyline as he figures out his next steps: career, relationships, home, but also living life outside of his job - a social life! creative or physical hobbies! enrichment outside the enclosure!

LET BUCK'S NARRATIVE FUCKING BREATHE 😮‍💨

if tim doesn't let Buck live his own fucking life in s9 that means he doesn't care about Buck as his own character or about the audience.

i think the crux of my frustration over buck's treatment by other characters during the breakup era is that: instead of treating him like the baby of the 118 they're just straight up treating him like a baby - someone who doesn't know how he feels or what direction to turn so they tell him to just forget about his devastating heartbreak and move on already like it's so simple easy peasy you'll be fine. it's also how he's been written: like he doesn't know his own heart and is too clueless to follow it or think things through.

also the total lack of queer solidarity on hen's part for her dumped bisexual friend (a henren scene would've been spectacular) is a glaring issue, and the repeated belittling or ignoring of buck's feelings by all - like when he was freaking out over maybe killing gerrard and we were thrust into bizarro world dance party mode (not that i don't love the zaney elements of the show, but read the room and moreover this keeps happening to buck like instead of enrichment in his hamster wheel enclosure his loved ones are spinning the fucking wheel).

most of the episodes in 8A were poorly written with unnecessary or bland or overstuffed or speedrun dramatic plot and mismanaged character studies.

where has the heart gone? where are the meaningful character rich conversations and insightful storylines that show them as 3dimensional and why tf have they been replaced by cheap cringey laughs and flippant tones that repeatedly miss the mark? where are our beloved supporting characters? why did they fumble so much angsty potential with established characters? who tf traded that for brad on centrestage?

i could go on, but i won't. i'm venting this before bed. we all get the gist. wtf is going on???

i was blogging about destiel for 4 years after they sent the gay angel to superhell and didn’t let the bi guy reciprocate and instead gave him a disrespectable death and told him a shitty hellish heaven was what he deserved when he just wanted to live as one last fuck you to queer rep for men 30+. 

i’ve been here before. i’m not going anywhere. 

i came here for ongoing positive queer rep for men 30+ and i’m staying bc i know when the show don’t got me, fandom does. fandom always has, bc these stories mean more to us than any beancounter or wayward showrunner could care to comprehend. i’m staying to create and to continue celebrating everything bi buck and gay tommy and bucktommy gave us (up to a point). 

this is not where their story ends. this is where fandom takes custodianship and gives the characters and their journey together everything denied to them by tptb. we honour them, and heal ourselves, by carrying on their story the way they deserve, and the way we deserve.

that is why fandom exists; to fix what was so carelessly broken and to keep stories alive that deserve to be kept with care and understanding. 

i appreciate every one of you who has shared joy and positivity for these beautiful queer men and their forever kind of love, and just know that i will continue doing the same.

this is my morning reminder that abby*tommy isn't canon in fact Tommy was engaged to a different woman or perhaps a man but definitely not a woman who wasn't at all his type and who was older than him and whose timeline doesn't match up and the audience doesn't deserve shoehorned bs storylines like that to link these men bc their connection is their own goddammit they don't need relationship ghosts muddying things for dramatic effect bc they have enough personal drama on their own to complicate things for juicy content thanks

fucking begging (with knives clutched in my prayer hands) for tim to treat tommy as a character instead of just a plot device, and to let bucktommy stand on its own merit instead of knotting ill-fitting baggage into their narrative.

don't opt for the cheap stab that confounds more than it entertains and only serves to take independance away from tommy's story.

- that's not a man who was engaged to a woman several years his senior for years after finally freeing himself of the shackles of the 118 to come out of the closet and spread his wings and fly.

(i won't go into it again but tommy deserved to have a mlm relationship backstory that led to buck spiralling and the subsequent breakup, not a shoehorned nonsensical fakestraight rship whose only narrative link was a reused first name)

- that's not a man who yearned to be a part of the 118's closeknit family unit only to then secretly resent his new friend for being a close friend to his new boyfriend.

(they set up tommy's friendship with eddie so damn well in 7x04 then dropped it like a bag of coal while fandom turned it into diamonds in fic and meta as we foolishly looked forward to the same onscreen)
