LOVE a Hen and Athena centered storyline!!!!! I love seeing black women get exclusive scenes with each other and be full of joy and friendship!!! i LOVED the bar scene. "Here's to not dying tomorrow" "here's to dying tomorrow!" They're so good. and Aisha and Angela are SO GOOD.
also - with the high stakes of this episode, isn't it an absolute wonder that Tracie Thoms plays Karen (a non-main character role, a spouse of a main character), and we've had her since season 1???? I LOVE that she's amazing and that means we can give her entire storyline spotlights like this. It's incredible and I love it.
And speaking of non-main but lovable recurring characters, Sue!!!! and Terry! and Karen's coworker who I feel very sure we saw before with her in her other work related storyline(s). I absolutely love them all.
So Harry dropping out from high school is brought up again and I'm still not really satisfied with his/the explanation of why he did it. We've got a) he did it to get his mother's/other people's attention, and/or b) he made a decision because he's an adult. and everyone else gets to make decisions, like his mom, dad, and stepfather did. I'm still not sure I see how it all adds up, but very soon I'm sure I'll get to a "well it's happened, we can't go back now" situation. Maybe it's just grief being dealt with poorly? But that conversation between May and Harry DID feel SO in-character for Harry, really connecting not just to the recent seasons of Harry, but back when it was the child actor Harry, he could also get mad. And scheme. Pretty consistent character imo!
The scene where everybody is in the station's loft living room explaining what's going on actually made me really appreciate that Bobby was gone, because if Bobby had been there, he would've taken all of the weighty explaining/reassuring moments, or at least a hunk of them, but instead we get Eddie and Buck and Chim stepping into their own leadership and parental roles. To some degree that would've happened if they'd just had Bobby retire, but oh well. This way is more comprehensive.
Which, Buck and Eddie are basically D plot actors at the moment, but it doesn't mean I don't love them and all they do. I like this version of Eddie - close friends with Karen and Hen, reassuring to Mara, confident and competent in the field! And Buck is as empathetic as always, (and of course hella competent in the field) while being Big Brother Buck to Harry! and I, just like everyone else, am/was slightly obsessed with Eddie backing Buck up about letting Harry ride-along because Chris did it when he was much younger! I love them.
All of the emergencies I enjoyed! And I really enjoy how fleshed out they made the other people in space with Hen and Athena - they could be such stereotypes - and in some ways they are - but particularly the shallow ones turn out to be good people deep down and totally willing to help and pull together as a team! I will say though, the driverless car thing - I mean I don't want to get in a driverless car anyway - but the real horrible thing about that is having a Horrible Time and then once you get out you get shrapnel to your forehead. That guy's in his own Horror Movie.
I also have a bit of a gripe about how, just like in the earlier season storyline with the hackers, the show over-exaggerates how much tech can and will fritz out if something is disconnected. And like, some of these things are internet based, which is not (entirely) satellite related, but also, something not working usually just doesn't work. But it's a storytellers choice! And if imaginary elon musk makes so much ubiquitous tech that goes crazy if it's out of contact with satellites, then so be it.
Oh! small fun casting note - I basically know the guy who plays Tripp Hauser as "Kelly Ripa's husband" because I can never remember his name, but I've always been fond of them ("them" being "Kelly Ripa and her husband"). Also, the guy playing his tech guy who knows what he's doing I recognize the actor so acutely, but I guess I only know him from Teen Wolf? I could've sworn he was in more stuff.
Ending the episode with Fire in Space and about to lose contact... Iconic. this is Real Television hours. and et cetera. Also I wonder how many times I'll need to watch these episodes before I don't automatically remember that my first watch was on my phone riding the cta to a stupid [redacted].... like it was fun but it was frustrating.
