“...Dad? What are you two doing?”

Aki glances up from the pile of dust he’s sweeping up. Shinji pauses his gathering of items to look at Ken and Goro where they stand in the doorway.

“Hey, you two. We’re cleaning up. Guests are coming over tomorrow,” Aki replies, a smile on his face. Shinji forces himself to continue cleaning up. If he spends any more time listening to Aki, he’ll forget what he was doing.

“Guests? Oh. Oh- OH!” Ken suddenly bounces up, a grin spreading across his face. “You mean-? They agreed? They’re all actually coming!?”

Goro looks at his brother, scrunching his nose. “Who’s coming?”

Ken pauses his bouncing to look at Goro. “SEES! Uh- a group we were a part of two years ago.” He gestures to himself, Aki, and Shinji awkwardly.

Goro raises an eyebrow, walking into the living room to fold the blankets scattered around. “A group? Of what kind?” He asks.

“Specialised Extracurricular Execution Squad. A Shadow-killing group formed by Mitsuru a while ago,” Aki says, sitting down on the sofa.

Goro frowns, but says nothing as he joins Aki. Shinji and Ken do the same, all cuddled up to each other. Goro is leaning against Aki near the armrest, Ken is squashed comfortably between Aki and Shinji. “I think you’ll like Makoto-san, Goro. You kinda act like him,” Ken mumbles, voice slowing. He’s tired. Shinjiro knows it.

Goro huffs, cuddling further into Aki. “I doubt it,” he mumbles, yet it holds no weight. No malice.

Shinji just smiles. “Don’t worry. It’ll be okay.”

Goro says nothing. Neither does Ken, nor Aki. When Shinji checks, they’ve all fallen asleep.

He decides then and there that this is how life is supposed to be. Life is supposed to be spent with his husband and kids. Life is supposed to be spent together. Life is supposed to be lived.

This is how it’s supposed to be.

I read that aki was sweeping up dust and my immediate thought was ‘holy shit shinji tuned to dust when he died just like undertale.’ help.
