Just saw a post about Rudo and Enjin as a ship and well we gotta delete the Internet now.

I'm not one to post about hating a ship or anything like that but that's just wrong.

i love lockwood & co because not only does it not shy away from the fact that these are literal children, but it makes it part of its narrative.

so many narratives avoid the fact that the typical “chosen one” is under the age of 18 (think percy jackson, charlie bone, maze runner); others touch on it and make it a part of the series’s deeper meaning, but they never make it explicit enough that the kids actually reading it or watching the movies can immediately pick up on it (think hunger games or carry on); but l&c makes a huge point that these kids are literally being used in the most explicit way possible.

lockwood and lucy immediately point out that adults get in their way because they don’t have talents. lucy openly condemns the system for exploiting kids for money. lucy gets out of the interrogation room because she’s so incredibly young and scared. there’s constant juxtaposition between the kids having to do horrible traumatic things and adults telling them they’re lazy. it’s just so profound and pointed: these are not kids you want to be. this is not some grand adventure. this is scary and traumatic and they are not old enough to be forced into this position.

i think watching it, after growing up surrounded by chosen one tropes and rereading some of them recently it’s just so refreshing and jarring to see material where being a kid is scary and horrible and the main characters really shouldn’t be doing what they’re doing. it’s so nice having material that reminds kids that they aren’t supposed to be saviors at 14 - and anyone who says otherwise is mostly a bad guy.

of course it still plays at the inner hero in all of us. of course it still shows that turning twenty and growing up can be horrible. but it also highlights the fact that these are kids - and they aren’t big and old and powerful, they are being forced to fight battles they never should have to.
