Let the Blathering Begin
Hello friends! Since it’s September, it’s Prepping For Halloween season. Since the acquisition of Cerise, my sewing machine, I’ve decided to try my hand at making my own costume this year. And of course, who better to be than my fine feathered friend, my birthday buddy, Blathers, museum curator extraordinaire?
(yes, I do in fact dislike bugs about as much as he does)
Anyway, I picked up two enormous brown faux suede curtains from Goodwill in the perfect color, and only needed one panel to cut out the jacket pieces. I’m using McCall 7071 with some modifications, because that jacket needs HELP in the front region. (The rest of the pattern is an insult to the Second Bustle Era and I’ve elected to ignore it entirely.) In a fit of Inspiration, I started sewing last night.
I’m ridiculously proud of it so far. As for modifications, I’ve shortened the collar to sit nicely on the shoulders, rather than doing the weird choker-collar situation from the original pattern. I’ve also added some darts to the bust area for a better fit, and will be hacking out some of the armscye so it’s not so pinchy in the underarm area.
Today’s plan (after schoolwork) is to add the pleated back semi-skirt and make the sleeves. Then, a trip to Joann’s for Mystery Supplies To Help Me Later.
