Liebestraum
"I was dead from love's bliss; I lay buried in her arms; I was wakened by her kisses; I saw heaven in her eyes" < the original lyrics in German here >
Let's admit it dear Gavin stans. Papergames blesses us with a full fledged love story when it comes to Gavin and MC. The story given to us has almost everything a complete love story would have. Up until this point the only thing we are missing are a first kiss date and that Gavin finally pops up the question. Altough, we are going to witness their first kiss very soon. So it's only Gav-babe proposing to MC which we will probably never get :/
Today I would like to invite you to watch this video with me and listen to MC playing this song in the music room as Gavin goes through his life changing fall.
⚠️This post includes spoilers up to CH18⚠️
Liebestraum (Dream of love) is a piano piece that consists of three solo parts with each part representing a different type of love.
The first two parts of the song consist of two solo piano chords molded into one and they tell about the heavenly love first and then about the erotic love. Thus, the first sentence of this analysis is taken from the poem which is the muse of the first two parts of this song by Ludwig Uhland "Seliger Tod" (blessed death) or as I say :la petite mort:
The third one, and the one which is dedicated to Gavin and MC, depicts the mature love that is based on this poem from Ferdinand Freliligrath that touches upon themes of love and loss of love.
The poem might appear to have a depressive aura to it, but at its core its about cherishing every moment with the beloved one for life is too short and ever love will face death sooner or later and one party will be grieving at the grave of the other.
This suits Gavin and MC all too well, because everytime they have to say goodbye, they want to make the best of every second. They don't know what the future holds, but they are going to stand next to each other as long as they can. Gavin will accompany her till the very end and she will be waiting for him to come back from his missions.
O love, love as long as you can!
O love, love as long as you will!
The time will come, the time will come,
When you will stand grieving at the grave.
💫💫💫💫💫
And let it be that your heart glows
And nurtures and carries love,
As long as another heart is still
Warmly bestruck by love for you!
The poetry of this song fits to our lovebirds story very well doesn't it? However I want to show you something else. Please watch the hand movements on the video. They also tell Gavin and MCs story. But only until CH18. How, do you ask?
The way I see it, the left hands represents Gavin and and the right hand MC. The first one minute's hand movements are telling the story of their high school years. The fingertips don't apply much pressure on the keys, therefore the music is soft and carefree. The right hand stays mostly where it is, playing her tune in a loop by herself. The left hand on the other side is moving back and forth. Much like Gavin trying to get close to MC but then taking a step back. The right hand acts as though she would be playing the song alone, much like MC not being aware of the things Gavin does behind the scenes. She is oblivious to all the things that are about to come and just plays her tune in the piano in the music room. Gavin on the other hand is very much aware of her existence and observes her carefully "I knew you were before you've even noticed me" wants to get close to her, get to know her, but he just can't. When the music gets louder much like his desire to talking to her and telling her about his feelings, we see the left hand alone at 01:08 mark. Gavin waited for long hours at the library, waiting for MC to show up, so that he could tell her goodbye before leaving. See how the both hands not even once touch? Yeah, Gavin and MC also don't have any meaningful interaction during high school.
Sadly, their story is abruptly cut short before it could even start as Gavin joins the military school. Here the left hand plays just a few notes alone, this is Gavins years spent apart from MC. These years felt like they wouldn't pass and his life didn't have much taste to it.
But then at 1:17-1:24 they meet again and for the first time these hands touch each other, which leads to a hectic cadenza showing the emotional turmoil that this reunion causes at our birdcop's pure heart. Both hands get hyped up as they move towards the higher sounds together and then come back with trembling - like-crazy fingers and stay in their position. That is the moment in CH2 when MC and Gavin fly for the very first time. Their heart flutters, MCs heart skips a beat and a beautiful love starts blooming.
From 1:25 to 2:00 minute mark, we see these hands trying to imitate each other in a clumsy manner as in Gavin and MC trying to get to know each other from CH3 to CH7. Both hands touch by the thumb at C-sharp and D-sharp keys respectively as they meet in the middle. There are many misunderstandings, awkwardness and caution along the way. The arpeggio with broken chords also accompanies this thought, the melody isn't in a perfect harmony. So are our lovebirds. As we reach the chorus at 2:00 up to 2:35 they are now playing a harmonious melody in which they even play parallel tunes from 2:05 to 2:10 where we see both hands playing the same pattern and they mirror each other. This is where MC and Gavin start to become partners, companions and lovers. The chorus resembles the period between CH7 and CH14, where they get closer to each other, spend more and more time together but also adjust their demeanor to each other. They are finding their "tune", together. The sound is high, both fingers are pressing strongly on the keys, their feelings are climbing as well.
But then between 2:36-2:40 the melody loses Tempo and the right hand travels to the highest of treble clef, to the edge. The left hand rushes to her, and then they fall together in CH14 with their embrace to the death. I see this scene and what plays in my mind is 2:41-2:53.
Thankfully the expected demise doesn't happen and they survive the fall, but things are different now. From 2:54 to 3:00 the right hand doesn't play with the same enthusiasm, it's quiet, hesitant in pressing against the keys. There is even a pause for 3 seconds to halt everything at its place. This is where the left hand starts crossing over and playing behind the right hand. Gavin was there to drag MC out of her depressive thoughts and to support her to rise above them. This is Gavin taking MC to a ferris ride, running with her in the rain, hugging her tightly and consoling her. Gavin was there to catch her while she was falling, much like she cought him. Our song has reached CH15 and tells the events of this chapter until 3:55 when Gavin is left with no choice but the leave once again to save her. Here the left hand only plays a note here and there while Gavin is bound with a series of tests and put in a watertank in his very own father's hands. The left hand is also pressing hard on the bass chords as a representation of the suffering Gavin has to endure.
Starting 4:04 the left hand acts like a shadow next to the right hand. This is when Gavin is back to MCs side in CH17, but he has changed and there is only a pitless void inside him. The chords being played here are actually MC speaking to him in her mind:
- Can you hear me?
- Can you see me?
- See my heart pounding again at the sight of you?
After the NW plan, Gavin changes remarkably so when they have their final call in CH18 he has no idea that he is actually bidding farewell to her. MC asks him if he's coming back soon, so that she could see him one last time to which he replies that he still needs a couple of days before he can return (As we know he is dealing with Perry and has his own fight) so when they are on the phone and MC asks him about sacrifice, he gives his answer from his standing point as he has to sacrifice a life himself to maintain peace:
"We want to avoid it at all costs but lots of times peace is built upon unfortunate sacrifice"
- Really? You... Nothing. You take care Gavin. Goodbye.
- I will. Bye.
Just like this being their final words before Victor kills MC, the song drifts away peacefully. The final one minute of this nocturne sounds like a coda. And we're left with a Gavin speaking to her voicemail, realizing halfway that she's the girl that has been killed. And just like that he is left the unbearable burden of having to face the grievance of the death of his girl.
----—----—-----—
Never had I known that this song could be so devastating! It starts on a hopeful note and yet ends with a heartbreaking separation. Nevertheless it is an enchanting song with an intoxicating melody that soothes the soul despite having a sad ending. Much like Gavin and MC until CH18. They start off in a meet cute, pursue many adventures together and fall for each other during the process, deepen their relationship and strengthen their bond, but his comes to an unexpected and immature ending before they could move forward.
Fortunately things change in the black cabin and afterwards our lovebirds enjoy some extra time with each other until the inevitable happens in CH37 which is coming soon.

So here is my last analysis for a whole dear producers. I need to somehow tidy up my Masterlist and the three analyses I'm working on will be posted after CH37 for the sake of coherence.
This doesn't mean the asks are closed though. If you have any wishes, please feel free to shoot ^_^
