#27: The Summer I Turned Pretty

This book tells the story of Belly Conklin who usually spends her summer in her aunt’s (her mum’s best friend) summer house in the Cousins. This particular book marks the beginning of the summer that changes the rest of Belly’s life. From the beginning of the book, we see that there is a looming threat of a love triangle between Belly and the two other boys she spends her summer with; Jeremiah and Conrad.

The title of the book clearly indicates that this book is a coming of age story which is mainly true.

Belly is the typical embodiment of a 15 year old; she’s shallow and self centred and in love with the damaged boy who is always out of her reach. For some reason, I was able to look past this because her flashbacks showed her to be a child who just always wanted to fit in with one of the boys.

It is quickly shown that Belly has been in love with Conrad for the past 5 years of her life which made for a lot of anguish throughout the book.

The characters in this book (though, not all) were interesting to read. Susannah Fisher was homely and nice and the literal embodiment of summer. I personally related to Laurel even better. I quite enjoyed the friendship between the two of them and my heart broke when it was revealed that Susannah was battling cancer for the second time.

Throughout the book, we see back and forth’s between Belly and Conrad that make you actually root for them. Despite the fact that Conrad seems like a selfish, entitled and downright damaged character, we are able to see that where Isabelle is concerned, he is occasionally able to drop this facade and be sensitive. Overall, I quite enjoyed this book. It was funny and sad in all the right places.
