The writers not only gave us an absolutely heart breaking scene that makes tears slither down my face. They also managed to tie it into his True Potential Arc all the way back in Season 1.

Cole's greatest fear is disappointing the people he cares about, especially his parents. So Lilly tells him (maybe one of the very last things she says) that she is proud of him and that's what he needed more than anything else.

Tony had offered Rhodey a more stream-lined suit. “I mean, you could probably do a lot more stealth missions, no offense,” Tony says. “So we could work on slimming it down and amping up some more discreet options.” 

“Nah,” Rhodey says. “I just need to work on the torque, no slimming down.” 

Rhodey doesn’t tell Tony why he doesn’t want it slimmed down. He could honestly use it at some points in his life and career. But he needs to be War Machine. 

The man behind Iron Man, the man who can and will kick your ass if you threaten. Not the main hero, the one who can get away with things because no one notices the other suit. 

He’s kept the suit the way it is so that people know who the hell they have to deal with behind the scenes.
