deeply amused by all the potential problems claire and owen not changing their last names could cause. namely the confusion at maisie’s future public school over whether or not maisie has divorced parents. it’s a whole debate. there’s the one 30 something new hire who’s all “it’s the 21st century guys. women don’t always take the husbands name anymore” who gets boo’d by everyone else because that’s city nonsense. there’s the suggestion that maybe they’re together but not married which displeases several staff because they’re living in sin. but them being divorced isn’t satisfactory either because divorce is also a sin.

of course it doesn’t help that owen is the primary school parent (as established by the PTA owen saga) and claire is a School Events Only type of mom. he doesn’t t wear a ring which fuels the divorce theory but he also speaks abnormally well about her for possible divorcees. very confusing stuff. owen also pointedly avoids any attempt at single mom flirtation which is either a sign he’s married or not interested in moms as a genre (clearly the former. claire’s milf-y status has only endeared him further). but an even more wild theory emerges that they ARE divorced but he wants her back. for those in the PTA specifically it’s clear he has some kind of feelings for his co-parent but it’s less clear if she’s reciprocating. the thing about claire is that you need to be a claire whisperer to really get what she’s expressing so to the outside observer she will always seem less reciprocal than she is. she cares deeply she’s just autistic. and by jove does owen love that autistic woman’s autistic ways. claire is, on average, pda averse (hates feeling exposed) so that really doesn’t help either. suddenly the narrative isn’t that they’re amicably separated but that owen is hopelessly pining for this WITCH who won’t give him the time of day. sad.

they think he "deserves better" which is the story of his life at this point (girlfriend who went on criminal trial for corporate negligence and the deaths of 250 people is apparently a BAD thing now 🙄🙄) and it’s the most annoying thing ever to him. he would’ve been visiting her in jail if he had to. #MyEvilWife. he is exactly where he wants to be and it's very pretentious to pretend like he isnt. maybe he should just change his name at this point because it's getting ridiculous. he'll be owen dearing who fucking cares.

surprisingly enough, no. I’ve never been asked.

I think they’d approach it very similarly to how their roles with maisie happened. albeit way more lenient because it’s a grandkid not kid proper. I don’t foresee much conflict with maisie over anything like “the proper way to raise kids” or any of that nonsense. they’re very content being grandparents instead of the primary caretakers.

claire doesn’t like kids except if they’re hers. this applies to grandbabies. all kids are evil ankle biters except her granddaughter (assumption that it’s a girl for sake of argument. they’re a girl family) who is perfect. she says everything like it’s very impressive. she’s one year old and she can already walk you know. like yeah. they generally do that in this time frame. owen is worse though because that’s his angel. she’d accidentally trip someone at the playground in a way that’s completely her fault and he’d be like oh my goddddd does no one watch their kids anymore? she could’ve been seriously hurt. he acts like he’ll Die if he doesn’t get grandbaby time. one week no pictures and he’s texting maisie like where’s my baby ☹️. and maisie jokes like jeez I see your priorities.

owen has a very hands-on approach in that he wants to buy an inflatable water slide so they can play. he is the grandparent who pushes her on the swings (and she’d be very demanding. she’s like that’s the worse push I’ve ever gotten. try harder. and he’d be like happy sigh. she gets that from grandma). he’s also the one they make go on the most terrible upside down multiple times roller coasters with her. he bravely shoulders this without complaint. claire is for bedtime stories and coloring and someone to repeat facts to over and over. claire hears the same fact about bears 30 times without complaint. grandma also gives the best gifts. she’s a Beast at christmas shopping. and she’s great at playing toys. much better than grandpa. her storylines are in character and engaging while owens always miss what she’s going for.

I don’t know if they’d live extremely close, but I imagine them living close enough that they’d be able to reasonably make every play/recital/sport/whatever. and they film them. owen has these hour long recordings killing phone space but he will never delete them. they always give massive applause and it makes granddaughter very happy. they’re so ready to praise every last thing she did, no matter how small, and the thing is is that they mean it. they are never sparing her feelings. it WAS life changing to see her do a little fairy dance. maisie would really like having them around at times like that because not only does it make daughter very happy, but it gives her a much needed break. they’re great at handling her high energy and managing to get her down at the end of the night too.

I also would like to imagine zach has kids around the same time and they’re like cousins to each other too. karen absolutely loves having a great niece and unlike tomboy maisie, this girl actually likes being put in dresses. she’s having the time of her life playing dress up with her great niece. karen probably spoils her more than claire tbh. they’re a smaller family which means they want to be tighter knit

the concept of claire and owen just Deciding they’re married one day appeals to me far more than traditional marriage because it’s honestly just how they operate. maisie is just their child now. they move in together within 24 hours of being back together. sharing a hotel room with the guy I went on one date with. owen realizes he can just start calling her his wife one day. why does the state decide who is or isn’t his wife??? why would he let it do that???

and of course he’d do this around karen without warning and she’d be like “IM SORRY??? was there an elopement I missed?? you bastards got married and didn’t invite me???” to which he has to explain that no they never did the signing papers thing. she’s just his wife now. which is honestly weirder and way more baffling. karens like “so you mean you’re engaged?? she’s your fiance??” and owens like no she’s my wife. no one really understands the logic. but no one understood the logic to their previous u-hauling either so

statistics no one has ever asked for: clawen baby edition

this started with me wondering "i feel like it's more common for people to invent daughters for them, but is that true". so i set out to prove it.

parameters: NO maisie (or zach/gray). maisie would significantly sway these results. this accounts for OCs only. this also explicitly excludes child-free fics as, obviously, that would also significantly sway results.

results: out of 70 recorded babies, there is a near perfect 2/3 preference for girls. interestingly, out of 25 recorded male babies, only 2 are only children. 23/25 male babies have siblings. 21 of those babies have sisters. i must stress: there are only 3 fics in my study where they have only boys. if a boy exists, he is extremely likely to have a sister (and this ISNT including maisie). however, 22 of my girls are only children. boys are likely to have sisters but girls don't necessarily have brothers. i don't even know how to begin to speculate on this discovery.

HOWEVER! there are 2 outlier fics (in the mathematic sense). they exceed the upper boundary limit of the amount of kids in a fic (we'll get to this in a moment). removing these from the data set, the gender ratio slightly changes in the girls favor. it is now more than 2/3 being girls but not quite 3/4ths yet. there is roughly a 70% chance any given clawen child is a girl.

still accounting for 2 outliers (in the mathematic sense), the average amount of children is 1.4872 and the median is 1. i think we can say with decent confidence that when writing non-maisie kidfic, 1 is the average amount of children clawen will be given. and this child will most likely be a girl. even when maisie is absent, maisie's presence is felt.
