any musings on a.l.e.x. and his whole deal?

I did recently have a little thought on alex and what his experiences with eye contact might have been like.

While he was getting developed, standards and any programmers working on him likely just talked to his screen when addressing him, regardless of where his camera was. He comes to assume that’s just how conversations work, “a person comes within vicinity of these hardware parts in this room, that means they’re talking to me”. But then he meets david who walks straight up to his camera and starts talking to that, and has the experience of being directly addressed on the terms of his own computer ‘biology’ rather than what’s convenient for citizen employees. how would that make him feel.

i think this is also a good opportunity to attach some general stellar firma computer thoughts I’ve been having too while we’re on topic (and a tiny teaspoonful of alex to represent the teaspoon of screen time he got ú-ù)

a.l.e.x. for the character asks?

reunion of the alex appreciation club <3 his voice isn’t annoying, he’s doing his best and literally has no other choice, cannot believe more people don’t love him

with the dynamics part, i circled it partially cause that’s how I feel about all characters but also because i think that were he to become self-aware, noticing the different ways people treat him would be a pretty big catalyst for his development. Standards’ demands and conditional niceness, Imogen’s prickly, assertive manner that is alien to him at first but he later learns is a survival tactic, Enola who befriends him out of genuine appreciation and doesn’t devalue him, it’s all so interesting to explore

it’d start to go into heavy headcanon territory, but god i want to write fic about him
