Oh, not really… I was going to go shopping for dinner, but that’s about it.

Azuma  

Is that so? Good, I’m glad you don’t have much. This works out, seeing as I thought to ask if you’d like to accompany me to the soap shop.

I’ve used up almost all of my favorite soap, and I thought you might come along as my partner. What do you say? 

Izumi  

Sounds great! I’d love to come.

Azuma  

Fufu, it’s settled.

Izumi  

Wow, it smells amazing in here. There are so many types of soap!

Azuma

Azuma  

Fufu, that’s right. Pretty interesting, isn’t it?

Izumi

It’s a type of konjac soap. 

Izumi  

Ohh, now that you say that, it does feel like konjac jelly…

Azuma  

Don’t you think it’s cute? It’s quite the popular gift item.

The ingredients used in making konjac are known for being great sponges, and they absorb toxins and excess sebum. It’s a lovely cleanser and leaves your skin looking very shiny.

Izumi  

I’m so busy all the time. I gotta admit it’s difficult for me to remember to properly cleanse, even though I know how important it is to keep a clean face.

Konjac is quite versatile. As an example, it can also be used for sponges, dietary supplements, and many other beauty products.

Izumi  

Wow, it’s that handy?

Yes, in fact I’ve used konjac sponges before. They’re gentle on the skin, which is nice.

I should have some unused sponges laying around. When we get back to the dorm, I’ll take a look and let you have one.

It’s just… Next month I plan to open a Chinese spirit themed ryokan.

I’m here to look for soaps that can go in the guest rooms.

Azuma

If your troupe has the time for it, I would really appreciate it if you came and helped out at the ryokan for a day as a spirit. 

I think the guests would really get a kick out of seeing a “real” spirit. What do you say?

Sounds interesting, but… what kind of spirit were you thinking of?

Yamamoto  

Three spirits in particular—Bixie, Huxian, and Niutou.

If you help me out, I would of course be happy to provide you with a meal and a stay in our nicest room. 

Azuma  

That sounds very enticing. You always come up with such top-notch ideas, Mr. Yamamoto.

Yamamoto  

The only thing that’s left is to find a good cook.

Izumi  

A cook, you say?

Yamamoto  

At the moment, I’ve yet to finalise the menu. It would be really nice if I could find someone to help with it.

Azuma  

That is not in my area of expertise, but perhaps my lovely director could help you out? What do you say, miss director?

Izumi  

I see… Would it be alright if I thought about it a little and got back to you?

Yes, it does tickle my interest. The only thing left is to decide who will play the spirits.

Mr. Yamamoto said he wanted to have three in total. They are called Bixie, Huxian, and Niutou.

Citron  

Obtuse, rubber goose, green moose, guava juice! I don’t get it at all!

Tsuzuru  

Dude, what the hell!? How did this turn into some crazy rhyming game?

Izumi  

So here are some more details about the Chinese spirit theme. First, about Bixie. She is a female Pixiu, “a creature that wards off evil.” Usually depicted with a pair of deer antlers. They say that Bixie helps out those suffering from bad feng shui.

Next is Huxian. Huxian is a fox spirit who has spent many years training in the mountains alone, and it is described as sexy and alluring in appearance. 

And at last, Niutou. Its name is made from the Chinese characters for “ox” and “head.” Just as you would expect, it is a spirit with the head of an ox. Niutou is responsible for collecting the souls of those approaching death so that they can be judged in front of the courts of hell. Sinners are punished, the righteous are rewarded.

Okay, after hearing the descriptions, Bixie sounds the most like Azuma, yeah?

I was thinking the same!

Homare  

Yes, he fits the role like a silk glove!

Tsumugi  

Since Mr. Yamamoto is Azuma’s acquaintance, it only makes sense that he would participate in the event.

Azuma  

Well, since it seems like everyone agrees, I will take the role of Bixie.

That only leaves Huxian and Niutou.

And you mentioned Mr. Yamamoto also wanted a skilled cook, yes? I think Omi would be good for that part.

…I knew this was going to be themed after Chinese spirits, but I didn’t expect the atmosphere to be so beautiful.

You two look quite handsome in your costumes. They really suit you.

Yukishiro, you’ll lead guests around the ryokan. Fushimi, you’ll be helping out in the kitchen and bringing food to guests.

And for Tenma, who can’t be seen in public, I think you would do a great job with yumomi.

You’ll be in a position where you won’t have to interact with guests too often, plus it’ll be hard to tell who you are in your Niutou costume.

Oh, and when in costume, I think it would be best to change your language a little to make it seem truly immersive.

That would be a nice touch, don’t you think?

I’ll leave it to you how you want to portray your characters.

I am one of those thieves who once worked as a page boy on Enoshima Island.

I began stealing gifts from temples in Edo.

Soon the money I stole began to pile up more and more.

It is me, the one and only Benten Kozo Kikunosuke.

Wow, so you really did make it to the end. You passed.

Upon seeing his performance, Yukinojou feels that Yukimaru has more than paid for his mistake at his first performance. However I find him to be a very interesting pick for someone like you, the son of a commoner.

At last Yukimaru begins his training. Despite his teachers having low expectations, he surprises them by excelling in each art he tries.

Yukimaru’s dance teacher, Fujisaka, also praises his abilities. However, as great as his abilities are, Fujisaka tells Yukinojou that becoming a Kabuki performer are slim to none. No matter how skilled Yukimaru is, he is still a foreigner with no noble lineage and no wealthy sponsors. On top of that, he began his training very late. Fujisaka grumbles that his talents would have to go to waste and recommends that Yukinojou consider a different career path for his student.

Well you know I had to come greet my partner before the performance.

I did not exactly have the easiest time getting into this industry myself.

Yukimaru continues to excel in his Nagauta lessons and earns praise from Yukinojou. However despite his achievements and praise, Yukinojou knew that the path to Kabuki would not be easy. He kept Fujisaka’s words in the back of his mind, concealed from his student.

Matsunosuke visits Yukinojou in his dressing room and asks why the other has chosen Yukimaru as his student. Yukinojou pauses at the question.

Well to get you started you first need to master the basic starting position and then—

I heard you studied Nagauta and dance in your home country so I am sure you can do a simple somersault, right?

Hmm yeah, I heard you are pretty strong, right?

I was moved by the beauty of your somersault you did earlier! 

Fukumaru

You want me to teach..

— You know it’s not something that you can simply learn overnight.

Sahul

I am sorry for asking..

Fukumaru

You know I don’t see any real potential in you. And not to rain on your parade, but I’m not the only one either, Yukinojou’s master also, well..

Sahul

Huh!?

Fukumaru

Hurry and just give up now and go back to your country.

Actor A

I think it’s time we start heading back.

Sahul

Thank you so much for helping me!

Actor B

Don’t overdo it.

Sahul

Okay!

Fukumaru

Sahul

Fukumaru

Sahul

Fukumaru

You gotta learn those three disciplines by the end of today after all.

I don’t see anything promising so I will just leave.

Sahul

Fukumaru

Sahul

.. But, maybe you do have what it takes.

Yukimaru visits the somersault dojo to learn how to somersault from Fukumaru. Fukumaru tells Yukimaru that he does not see anything in Yukinojou despite Yukimaru being his student.

When the other students leave, Yukimaru tries to practice on his own and perfects his form and stance. However he is disappointed that he is still not able to complete even a single somersault. Fukumaru notices Yukimaru continuing to practice and decides to give him a hand. With Fukumaru’s help, Yukimaru is able to finally do the somersault.

Good morning!

Matsunosuke

Hey Yukimaru, assistants need to wait over there.

Sahul

B-But I am Yukinojou’s student—

Matsunosuke

Do you really think it’s worth it to put so much effort into practicing even though you’ll never stand on stage? If you’re just doing this for a hobby you can leave.

Sahul

Yukinojou

That’s enough.

Matsunosuke

I am only being honest. Yukimaru will never become a Kabuki actor no matter how hard he works.

Guys like him are a dime a dozen. They can train as hard as they want and long for the stage, but the result is all the same.

This kid has no titles, no wealthy sponsor, is completely inexperienced, and on top of all that, he’s foreign. Did you really think you would get any support from the elders or your fans?

Yukinojou, this is what I have been trying to tell you from the beginning.

Sahul

Umm.. I.. Please excuse me, I’ll just go wait over there.

Yukinojou

Yukimaru..

Yukinojou and Yukimaru are both busy preparing for Yukinojou’s upcoming performance.

Yukinojou’s co-actor, Matsunosuke, mistakes Yukimaru for just another one of Yukinojou’s stage assistants. Yukimaru tells Matsunosuke that he is actually Yukinojou’s student. Despite his position as a student, Matsunosuke tells Yukimaru that he has no chance of ever becoming a Kabuki actor. He explains that not only is he older than other students, but he also does not have any titles, no wealthy sponsors, and most of all is foreign born. Yukimaru is shocked at these words and moves offstage.

Winter Troupe’s 7th Play: Hotel Compass 2/4

In a certain region, in a certain town lies Hotel Compass.

Established over one hundred years ago, the hotel sits far from popular tourist destinations and even the nearest train station. Unfortunately with its poor location, competing hotels have quickly snatched up many potential guests and this once grand hotel has begun to fall into disrepair.

The hotel has also been short staffed for quite some time, forcing the owner, Owari, and manager, Tsuzuki, to perform the majority of the maintenance and upkeep of the hotel. They spend each day tending to the needs of their few, but always eccentric guests.

Characters

Note: The theme of this play is “compass” with all the characters have direction-based names. I have included the character’s names in Kanji along with the double-meaning.

Azuma as Owari (尾張, sounds like “終わり, End”)

Guy as Tsuzuki (津々木, sounds like “続き,Continuation”)

Homare as Higashikawa (東川, East river)

Tasuku as Minami (三波, sounds like “南, South”)

Hisoka as Nishi (西, west)

Tsumugi as Kitami (北見, north view)

Owari

My apologies... I really had no idea this was going to happen.

The utilities here are so outdated I didn’t know how to properly use them.

Owari

.... My apologies for not explaining how they work.

Can we get Maeda from housekeeping up here?

Tsuzuki 

He is currently out today for personal reasons.

Owari

... Alright then, I’ll leave it to you, Tsuzuki.

Tsuzuki

.... Understood.

Azuma

Please allow me to show you to a different room, Mr. Nishi. Follow me.

Owari and Tsuzuki rush to Nishi’s room after getting a call from Higashikawa. The guest from the future tells Owari that he was not familiar with how the utilities in the hotel worked and thus flooded the room. Owari quickly moves Nishi to another room.

Despite his initial shock, Owari apologies for not explaining how to use the utilities to his time traveling guest.

Higashikawa

May I have a moment, owner?

Owari

What is it?

Higashikawa

It’s about that Mr. Nishi...

Something about him seemed a bit.... off....

The way he holds himself, kinda makes me think he may also be in the hotel business. I get the feeling he could be a spy for one of our rivals.

Owari

What could anyone gain by spying on us?

Higashikawa

Well, I guess.... You’re right.

Without knowing, Nishi’s posture and way of carrying himself tips Higashikawa off that he could from a rival hotel.

Higashikawa tells Owari that Nishi seems to act and move like someone who works at a hotel and that he suspects the mysterious traveler of being a spy. 

Despite brushing off Higashikawa’s concerns, claiming there was no reason anyone would spy on them, Owari decides to keep an eye on Nishi as well.

Minami

Hello....?

Ahh ahh, no, I’m on the verge of death...

No no, in a couple days, no, in two weeks..

I don’t think I will even have a pen with me...

No, there is no need to worry.

You don’t need to come over here.

I will definitely send it to you.

I promise.

Huh!? C-Can you see me?

W-Where are you watching me from....??

Kitami

....

Minami

C-Could it be..... No way...

Have you been there this whole time... ?

It’s no use!

THIS IS FINALLY THE END FOR ME!

Owari

MR. MINAMI!

Please refrain from trying to crush yourself under the sofa.

Minami

IT’S OVER!

The reaper will be coming for me soon.

Owari

Reaper...?

Minami

That man over there is my manager, Kuroda.

He is here to give me an ultimatum! He’s been watching me this whole time...!!

Owari

You mean that man over there...? He is a guest here at the hotel.

Minami

I know it’s him. Kuroda is a man who would do whatever it takes to get me to hand over a rough draft. He once climbed up the wall of my house to sneak inside. And he once pretended to be a delivery man so he could break into my house!!!

Owari

O-Oh, I see...

Minami

THIS IS THE END FOR ME! LET ME DIE!

Owari

P-Please hold on a moment!

I will make sure that Mr. Kuroda does not get to you, Mr. Minami, do not worry.

In the lobby, Minami talks with his editor on the phone. His editor demands that he hand over his rough draft for his latest work and tells him that he has been watching him from afar this whole time. Right after the conversation, the masked guest, Kitami, enters the scene. In a panic, Minami throws himself under a nearby sofa and attempts to crush himself before Owari steps in.

Minami tells Owari he suspects that Kitami is actually his editor in disguise. However, even after hearing Minami’s ramblings, Owari is still not convinced.

Minami continues to try and persuade the hotel owner, telling him that his editor is the type of person to go to extremes to get what he wants. He recalls a time when his editor even climbed up the side of his house to retrieve his latest draft. He is convinced that Kitami is his editor in disguise. Despite his own opinion, Owari promises Minami that he will keep Kitami away from him as long as he does not try and kill himself again.

It is from that point forward that Owari begins to pay close attention to Kitami. He watches the masked guest closely for any suspicious behavior or signs that he is trying to find Minami. Even without seeming to have a specific goal in mind, Owari causes quite a stir throughout the hotel around the employee entrances and exits. 

Higashikawa

Owner!

Do you have a moment?

Owari

What is it?

Higashikawa

I knew it all along.

Mr. Nishi is a spy!

I saw him behind the front desk!

Owari

Behind the front desk?

Tsuzuki

And that is why we have brought him here to have a word with us, however his story is a bit....

Owari

I see, then I will listen as well.

Tsuzuki

Please do.

Owari

Our apologies to have kept you waiting.

Nishi

No no, I should be the one apologising.

I am the one who went behind the front desk without permission.

Owari

Why did you do that?

Nishi

.... Well you see....

I am also an employee at a hotel.

But please do not read this the wrong way.

I am from a hotel in the future so I am not from any of your rivals.

Owari

Hmmm....

Nishi

I am learning about the history of this hotel.

So I thought it would be a good idea to try and spend a night here.

I then booked my room and came here.

However me being me, I naturally felt the need to want to help out around here.

Owari

Well if that’s the case, we are currently accepting applications for guest relations--

Tsuzuki

But Owner...

Nishi

Well I am sorry to say, but I will only be here until tomorrow.

Owari

Oh, I see.

Nishi

I am sorry to cause you trouble. Would it be alright if I stay here the rest of the night?

Owari

You are welcome to do so.

Nishi

Thank you so much!

Tsuzuki

Are you sure about this, owner?

Owari

Of course, it will work out.

Minami

.... A hotel worker... from the future? That is..

I feel some inspiration coming on!

Whilst Owari is investigating Kitami, Higashikawa calls him to the lobby. Higashikawa tells Owari that he found Nishi behind the front desk and he is now fully convinced that Nishi is a spy. Owari and Tsuzuki meet in the lobby to hear what Nishi has to say.

Nishi tells the group that he works in a hotel in the future and that he is conducting research into the history of Hotel Compass. As part of his research, he came to spend a night at the hotel. 

Nishi denies that he is a spy from a rival hotel and his story supports that claim. Despite Owari’s bewilderment at Nishi’s claims, he decides to accept his story and continue his stay at the hotel.
