TECHNOS DAD MET SKEPPY
CW kitten death, mourning, grief, guilt, cat funeral, all that fun shit.
Thunderjaw's grip on the bird is firm. He's long since learned how to maneuver things with his crooked jaw. Sunshadow is out on patrol and Bearpaw is out gathering herbs in this shit weather, so he really has no choice in this duty.
He brings it over to the thorn-surrounded entrance to his mate's den. His ears fold back a little as he crosses the threshold, annoyance lacing his expression. Rabbitleap is in the corner, asleep. His breathing is rough from the cold he has. He scans the den... and pauses as he sees a small pile of fur just out of reach from where Pinestep is curled up. His ears flatten to the sides of his head now.
Not another one...
Guilt sweeps over him and annoyance is swept away in the tide. He quietly approaches his mate. He sets the bird next to the nest and tries not to feel the burning of Pinestep's eyes on his fur. He keeps his eyes on the last little bundle of black asleep against the white of Pinestep's belly, blissfully unaware of the fate of her final sibling.
There's nothing for a moment. Then a whisper from a voice that's trying to be quiet so as to not wake the sick tom across the den, but hoarse from grief.
"Even if she survives winter... bareleaf... she's not going to survive Shellstar."
"...Sunshadow would take all of Shellstar's lives, even if he had all nine, if he ordered something that would hurt her."
"..." A faint sigh.
"And I would help her."
Pinestep flicked an ear. It's not much, but it's an acknowledgement of what was said. Thunderjaw stands and turns.
"What are you doing...?"
He settled down and pressed his nose into the nape of the small pile of fur that was named Rootkit. It wasn't much, but the clan could hardly hold a full vigil for yet another dead cat. They're stretched so thin, and winter has hardly started...
And...
He should have attended the vigils for the other kits. He should have helped more, sooner. Maybe there wouldn't have been as many vigils if he'd just...
A little bump against his side and he looks up. Two tiny blue eyes are looking at her brother. Two tiny blue eyes that, sadly, already know what Thunderjaw's doing. Oakkit's little body snuggles against his leg and presses her own little black nose into Rootkit's fur. He glances past her and sees Pinestep sitting up and eating the bird brought to him. He's likely already had his vigil. Thunderjaw closes his eyes again.
They will wait for Sunshadow to return, to allow her to have her own vigil for the kit. And then he'll be buried alongside his siblings.
Thunderjaw will offer to bury him. The ground is hard, he will likely tear his claws digging up the frozen earth. But some part of him is resigned to it being punishment for not helping the others.
I just had a horrible thought
So, of course, we're all sad about Sirius's death, right? But one thing that cheers us up is that he was finally reunited with Regulus, James and Lilly, and then Remus and all his other friends, and then later - Harry and everyone else. He was finally happy.
But.
Remember the veil he fell through? Wasn't it supposed to be used for the exploration of death or the afterlife or some shit like that? Well, what if it took Sirius to a different afterlife - or what if he didn't get an afterlife at all?
Imagine James and Lilly waiting for him - for months, years, decades even - but he never comes. At first Remus and Tonks join them, and they ask - "where is Sirius?" "He's not here", - James answers, confused, but then laughs it off, because "it's no big deal, moony, he just got lost again!"
They wait, longer and longer, and he's still not there. Then, after many years, Harry finally dies - he meets his family at last, Lilly, James, Remus, everyone is there - except Sirius. And that's when they realise that they will never see him.
Out of all places, the afterlife was supposed to finally unite them all. Wasn't it?
