A Beginner's Guide to Augmentative and Alternative Communication Options
This blog article gives an overview of different types of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and suggests options to suit different people:
Note: This post is accurate as of its most recent update – and will be updated periodically when I’m able to! I wanted to put together a so
Augmentative and alternative communication is essentially any communication that doesn’t involve mouth words. Most people think of apps and high tech, but there are many other forms too! AAC has different categories; the most commonly thought about are aided/unaided and light tech/high tech.
... The most important thing to remember is that communication is a human right. Mouth words are not “superior” to any other form of communication, and all forms of communication should be valued. The focus should be on providing quality and accessible communication that suits each person’s needs, not conforming to speech alone.
(Shout out to @anautistic for the tip about this resource. If anyone else knows of a good AAC resource, please reblog, drop a comment, or send an ask.)
I just saw online that Unity and LAMP will be on sale October 15-28, and I thought of you. I hope the sale price will be more accessible for you! There are also a ton of other AAC apps that are on sale in October if you’re looking for other options. The source I found posted a link that has a screenreader friendly version at https: // bit.ly AACAwarenessDeals2025. I hope you find things that support your needs! -From a school-based intervener (support worker specialized in deafblindness)
Thank! Kiku has LAMP (got it on sale during one of the sales about two ish years ago. Considering getting Unity eventually but have it on accent (right now they don't have one of the grid sizes Kiku uses, on ipad (Unity 144)).
Kiku has a bunch of aac apps that work well. ☺️ Just need more tactile options (like keyguards for ipad).
This will also be helpful for followers so thank very much. ☺️
