Still in progress... “Woman Behind the Masks” Many steps and stages. Casting takes patience and following the process. It will definitely take me three or four times start to finish to begin the apprentice process… Smile . I was thrilled to find this stage of worked. The oriole based wax sculpture was intact and the mold looked perfect. Now it is time to clean it all out…, Milltown up the wax, and be sure the sculpture bed is clean for the eventual filling of molten metal. Cleaning up my artwork and the bottom mold. Slow process and I had to stop yesterday because I was so tired (long & busy week with lots more to do!!) that I was fog-headed and dropping... Step 1 of mold making: Decide how many parts are needed… Which can be very complex depending on all the surfaces and indentations and angles… It hurts my head. Step 2 and beyond: I am putting soft clay under and up against the plasticine clay sculpture so that I can mix and pour a flexible mold solution on top of the figure’s back. Ahem... apparently that, too, will be a more challenging thing for my piece because of all the higher elevations of the masks. (Smack me in the head now… - wailed the tuckered Artist! Seriously, though, I definitely want to learn this casting and mold making sets of processes. To show just how crazy this girl is… I am also making what is called a slip cast in my other class… Which is a different way of casting clay pieces to fire in a kiln. I’m making a plaster cast for that one. Of course, drumroll ... I thought I had a simple sculpture/design… wrong!
