#Repost • @aadrl Adaptive Ecologies AADRL 2007-2008 Studio: Theodore Spyropoulos Team: CHIMERA Pierandrea Angius, Alkis Dikaios, Thomas Jacobsen, Carlos Parraga Morphogenetic design strategies enable an understanding of nature through constructs that actively couple singular and collective relationships, ordering the deployment of matter as a product of correlated interactions between the environment and each respective species. Within this natural world of metabolic balance the mangal – the plant community of the mangrove swamp – operates as a model of the social ordering of plants, demonstrating their migration and coevolution. A study of the mangal offers organisational strategies that afford an opportunity to consider population and performance as environmental drivers negotiating a force-deployed system that fosters adaptation and ecology. This research project takes the mangrove–mangal relationship as a model of response in developing a housing proposal for Hudson Yards in lower Manhattan. Computational frameworks are used to integrate a dynamic structuring of bundled aerated roots that iteratively version options for optimising trajectory and path, moving towards a four-dimensional network of emergent organisations. These choreographies of thrust lines are informed as set out trajectories constructing an integrated urban system of ground and vertical housing typologies that extend the existing infrastructure through horizontal to vertical migratory populations of unit distribution. We work anywhere, anytime. We meet, tweet and chat in lounges, clubs, incubators, shared workspace, hot desks, cafes, cars, coffee shops, drop-down benches, skype booths, concertation rooms, and hotel lobbies.” The office building is a typology that has quite specific roots in history and is shaped by the logic of economy, technology and their contemporary culture. Today, however, work happens everywhere but the traditional office space. Our project dismisses the traditional conception of the workplace and rethinks new paradigms that bring in the “lucidifiction” of work, that is the merging of play and work. It puts forward an architecture that is agile and challenges the conventional ideas of and static typologies and organisation, an architecture that is in constant fluctuation.
