Ten years ago, when Castiel took Claire Novak as his vessel, he unknowingly left a little piece of his grace behind. Now, that grace is killing Claire little by little. Ben and Jesse aren’t ready to let her go, but with their desperate search for a cure leading to nothing but dead ends, it seems her time is finally running out. Then unexpected tragedy strikes, and Claire must race against her own failing body and use her stolen grace one last time to set things right. As it turns out, Castiel may be the answer to all her prayers—but only if Claire finds the resolve to set aside her long-dreamed-of revenge against the angel who killed her father, and let him in one last time.

"The other thing I found," Aaron continues, "is what I wanted to talk to you about." He reaches into his jacket and produces a long, perfect silver blade.

"What are you doing with that."

They both turn at the ringing sound of Jesse's voice. Aaron's eyes narrow, but he moves slowly and calmly, placing the sword across his open palms. "If I wanted Claire dead, I've had plenty of chances before now," he says coolly.

The sword hums to her like grace, like palo santo, like the bracelet around her wrist but even more comforting because it's bright and it's sharp and Aaron is holding it like a gift.

I've been seeing posts condemning Cas for "torturing a child" in 6x03. I have a different take on this. Okay, let's analyze this.

Aaron Birch's young actor was 13 at the time, so Aaron was around the same age. He's no longer a little kid. His brother was killed by police officers who weren't held accountable, so Aaron took matters into his own hands. He sold his soul to an angel in exchange for an angelic weapon. He used it to kill three people in a gruesome, biblical way and suffered no consequences.

This thirteen-years-old killed three people and lost his soul.

We don't know what happens to a person who sells their soul to an angel, but it's certainly not good.

Cas performed a painful "souloscopy" on him to find out what's happening. It wasn't punishment or intentional torture. With the knowledge gained Dean was able to force Balthazar to return Aaron's soul. We also know that neither Sam nor Bobby had any negative side effects from this procedure. I guess a few moments of pain is a small price for getting your soul back. And Aaron got away with killing three people. They were murderers, yes, but he wasn't an "innocent child" either.

Dean was worried about Cas' behavior but he himself also did sometimes this "whatever it takes" thing.

(And you know what, maybe go ask Bela if she'd agree to a few moments of pain just so she could break the contract and get her soul back)

So it may be an unpopular opinion, but I don't think Cas did anything particularly wrong here.

the kid from s06e03 - The Third Man, in case you don’t remember, who was using the Staff of Moses to kill those cops that avoided justice after they murdered his brother. He was also ready to put himself in danger to protect his dad, when he thought the Winchesters were gonna hurt him. He so didn’t deserve to be scammed by Balthazar and hurt by Cas. What a brave kid, glad he got his soul back & hope he got home safely at the end of the ep.

The original version of this fic was published on August 5th, 2011, and only about 5.5k words long, something Liz banged out in a few hours. This version is much longer and we're happy to say includes many more characters in the wider scope of the verse! Additionally, like our last published fic, Enter Night, this is happening REAL TIME—the fic ends on this very day in history, Jesse's 19th birthday. He is...not in this fic, but we wish him a happy birthday all the same.
