So what about that original spn ending they never filmed?
Apparently they were supposed to meet at the Roadhouse, sit next to each other, and Cas was supposed to have his arm around Dean (or vice versa, I've heard both versions).
So what was that supposed to mean? And how were we supposed to interpret it?
In s6/7 Sam and Dean weren't just trying to stop Cas, they were both trying to really kill him. Sam stabbed him in the back with an angel blade. Dean used Death as a weapon and said "Just kill him now!".
And then, despite all the nasty things Cas said to them, he didn't do anything in return; he simply walked away. But that long look he gave Dean when he freed Death...
And even though he'd come this far and gotten so lost, and done what he did, after hearing Sam's prayer, in a moment of clarity, he returned to them.
Cas is the only one of the three who, during their dark storyline, willingly, rather than being forced, decided to end it and came to them for help. Even though he knew it would kill him.
I wanted to say something about this deleted scene from 15x19.
From an angel's perspective, calling another angel a good soldier was high praise and a compliment. Cas had previously said this about Balthazar, Ezekiel and Hannah.
Michael changed greatly under Adam's influence. I think he's begun to understand and appreciate people and their feelings. Just compare his two scenes at the bar, with Zachariah (when people died because of him), and with Lilith (when he only erased people's memories).
Honestly, I was moved when Michael said this phrase about Cas with such a sincerity and seriousness. I think he was simply expressing his condolences as best as he could. He understood Dean's grief because he had recently lost Adam himself. Besides, they truly lost a good soldier.
And then there was Dean's reaction, his visible heartbreak...
It's just my interpretation of this sad, emotional scene. I really wish this scene had stayed in the episode.
It's funny that during Cas and Dean's second stay in Purgatory, they only met the leviathans there. I think all the other monsters, taught by experience, hid behind trees to avoid being accidentally encountered.
His brother killed his daughter. She had a pink suitcase. They had to do something with her body and her suitcase.
But the Amazons probably knew they were sending her to her death. How could they expect her to handle two hunters alone? Maybe it suited them because Emma was different.
Poor Emma, she was cursed from the start, like all the Winchesters. She never had a chance.
And Dean remembered her. At the beginning of s12 he told Mary he had a daughter, but that didn't make it into the episode.

Those lines in spn 4x03:
SAMUEL: Nice job in there.
DEAN: I missed the shot.
SAMUEL: Take the compliment, son. I'm saying that I was wrong about you.
That was it, the warning that Samuel was possessed. Azazel/Samuel complimented Dean, as did Azazel/John, but this time Dean didn't notice. Dean knew John very well and knew what to expect from him. But he'd only known Samuel for a few hours and didn't recognize the pattern. And then it was too late.
What happened to Jimmy and his family was tragic, and Cas regrets it the most. But on the other hand it's true what Dean told Claire: that thanks to Jimmy's sacrifice Cas could have saved the world. Sure, that was an oversimplification, but it's true that Cas' help was crucial in many cases.
For example, he defended the Winchesters from Zachariah, threw a molotov at Michael, defeated Raphael (Pyrrhic victory, but still), recognized Dick Roman, and exposed Metatron.
He could do all of this only because Jimmy agreed to become his vessel, because that's how angel biology works.
Cas was the only angel who sided with humanity, and he paid a great price for it. And Jimmy gave his life in that fight, but it wasn't Cas who killed him. This wasn't some personal adventure for Cas; it truly was a fight to protect humanity.
Dean told Claire that Jimmy was a hero and that his sacrifice wasn't in vain, and that's the truth. Thanks to this, Claire gained the strenght to forgive. Sure, she still had plenty of problems, but at least this one no longer poisoned her soul.
I'm convinced of that because of Grumpy Cat. Long afterward, she still had it and held it close. If she hadn't forgiven Cas, she would've thrown his gift in the nearest trash can.
I've noticed that Cas is drawn to women who have cared for him in some way. Daphne, Meg, April and Hannah all took care of him when he needed help (regardless of how it ended). And who else took care of him sometimes? Oh yeah, Dean. Just saying.
