For a long, long time
Mr. Eternity: A Novel by Aaron Thier (Bloomsbury USA, $26).
Aaron Thier’s second novel, an episodic tale of 560-year-old Spaniard Daniel Defoe, is a kind of Little Big Man on steroids. In Mr. Eternity: A Novel, Dan tells us the secret to eternal life: Don’t die.
Also, have a purpose.
His purpose is to find his one true love, Anna Gloria; it’s a quest that leads him from life as a conquistador searching for the city of gold to a post-apocalyptic America of the 22nd century, when St. Louis is a desert. With the sort of pastiche story-telling Thier employed in his first novel, The Ghost Apple, he shows us how current events become history and finally transform into myth. It’s a satisfying story, but it’s also an examination of how stories are created.
“I’ve been inside for six hours, and all I’ve done is watch videos of people vomiting after eating the world’s hottest peppers.”

“Most of us don’t struggle to get enough food; we struggle to get the right food.”

“Herewith an alternative Paleo diet concept: eat anything you want, as long as you have a crazy justification for doing so, and you’re probably living the way human beings always have.”
Aaron Thier on the real Paleolithic diet.

Why should an avocado tree have evolved a large, soft, exceptionally rich fruit if humans are the only creatures that tend to carry them around and scatter the seeds? Aaron Thier on the evidence of a world roamed by giants.
Is coconut water as magical as everyone says it is? Aaron Thier on the “pure” truth.
