don't take me too seriously yet these are just some doodles because i forgot to cite a major design inspo for laconia when i did her little OCtober sheet

and also some half baked thoughts of "wouldn't it be funny if she were actual mycenaean sparta and then retired" that i don't actually have enough evidence or knowledge to develop so

but you know me i just sort of make stuff up for narrative convenience sometimes so i can tell more stories and i should just be more straightforward about it. I just think it would be a super interesting design contrast to draw if i ever figured out what the hell im doing.

I am sort of placing the building blocks for a development in her relationship with sparta in future chapters but i haven't like fully thought through it and its hard when you develop a character for the purpose of one thing and then they kind of take on lives of their own yknow. i'll stop saying words when i have nothing to say and go back to thinking now haha.

I love Laconia and Attica...anything with either of them...only if you feel up to it of course

it's the perfect opportunity to reveal that these two were inspired by Lampito and Lysistrata :) The line here is something like "you're handling me like an altar sacrifice"

No I'm not still petty about that comment. Why would I be? I just feel like some people's definition of "pretty" is informed more by their culture than one that existed 2500 years ago. He probably wanted a blonde girl with an hourglass figure, I'm sure.

anyway she has to be at least a little masculine or sparta would be scared of her right? hence her getting a haircut on their wedding night right...

Have a day off today so I basically took the last four hours to just sit comfortably and doodle (while watching videos of people sketching for inspo) and it was super relaxing. There's even a couple redraws from chapter one and two if you squint.

Quick Ref:

Pausanias: The Spartan general during the Battle of Plataea all the way back in Chapter 4 who got bricked up in that temple for cozying up to Persia.

Hyacinth: I drew some hyacinth flowers since they were named for the mythical Spartan prince and lover of Apollo who was worshipped in cult at Amyclae. It’s possible the larkspur (delphinium) might be a better match to the flowers though.

Comments:

I forgot to specify this scene takes place a couple nights before the previous storylines, I hope it’s not too confusing flipping back and forth :x

This scene is a parallel to the one in the last chapter, so if it looks familiar that’s why. Like I say, Laconia represents both Spartan women and the perioikoi, and she is as invested in the safety of their shared territory as Sparta is. The “city” of Sparta, if a handful of villages in a trenchcoat can be called such, resembles small settlements around Greece far more than it does Athens. It doesn’t have any walls either, so geography and people make up most of the defence.
