careful fingers tinker with the spare part.   if she ups the tone frequency,   the radiated modulation depth will be increased.   there’s still the issue of atmospheric noise being a pain in the ass   .   .   .    but even if the signal’s dampened,   it’ll be out there,   and they’ll have a shot at finding more survivors.   gaze lifts reluctantly from her workstation at the words   ———   what part of having her hands full and her head down didn’t scream i’m busy?  

“   i don’t need you to tell me that.   ”   she’s been cleared for duty and the last thing she needs is someone telling her to keep her chin up.   looking at her like she’s wounded.   she’s fine.   she’s not broken.     “   it’s all i do   .   if you really want to be useful,   less ‘everything’s gonna be okay’ and more grabbing that insulator off of wick’s desk.   ”
