Sunscreen DIY
Sunscreens are full of a million and a half ingredients now. Here is a great recipe that a colleague recently shared with me, so you don't have to take a gamble while protecting yourself. You will need a few tools for this. A small blender, 6 or 7 small mixing bowls and a sterilized bottle or pot. The process takes a lot of mixing for minutes at a time. So getting a hand mixer or small blender will be your best bet. Skin Essentials Actives is a great website that has all the ingredients you will need to make any skin care item from scratch.
Ingredients
Jojoba Oil 27 grams Sea Emollient 30 grams Distilled H2O 18 grams Vitamin E Acetate Powder 1 gram Glycerin 3 grams Lecithin Powder 9 grams Polysorbate 80 0.5 grams Grape Seed Extract 0.5 grams Zinc Oxide (coated) 22.5 grams
Here we go, measure out all your ingredients. Step one, combine the Oil and Lecithin. Pour Oil in a small glass bowl then stand it in a pan of warm water. Add in Lecithin slowly and stir. Add Polysorbate 80 and blend in the blender. Slowly incorporate the Zinc Oxide into the emulsion. Blend each time you place some Zinc Oxide into the blender. Scrape down sides as you go. Mix until Zinc Oxide is gone. Place mixture into a bowl and set aside. Clean out your blender. Now combine the Sea Emollient and Glycerin. Blend thoroughly. Place that into a separate little bowl. Now combine the Vitamin E Acetate and water, then blend until dissolved. Add Grape Seed Extract to the Vitamin E Acetate water already in the blender and mix. Now you can start combining your previous mixtures. First the Sea Emollient and Glycerin mix. Mix well for around 2-3 minutes. Make sure to incorporate everything from the side of the blender. Now Put the Zinc Oxide mix into the blender bit by bit, pausing to hand mix and scrape down the sides. This will get very thick and creamy. Mix for at least 10 minutes. After that you should have a creamy off white sunscreen! you can add it to your sanitized bottle or jar.
