It's been bizarre watching conservatives try to salvage Trump's abysmal debate performance by claiming that the moderators "put their thumb on the scale" by fact-checking him. Their evidence for this is, wait for it, that they only fact-checked Trump.

And, yeah, of course they did! Harris certainly stretched the truth a few times, as most politicians do, but she didn't say anything so patently false that a journalist could cite one piece of factual information to completely disprove it.

Trump got fact-checked because he didn't just spin, he told outright, pants-on-fire whoppers of lies. Repeatedly. And he had been telling those lies for a few days before the debate as well, which gave the moderators plenty of lead time to make sure they had their facts straight and ready for when he lied to them live and on-air.

Ultimately, if you're complaining that the moderators fact-checked Trump, I have to ask what your goal is. Seriously, do you want a fact-free free-for-all where the candidate who tells the biggest and most explosive whopper wins? The only people on stage with any stake in the truth are the moderators, the candidates just want to win. If they can't interject factual information to correct even the most egregious lies, then we may as well give up on making our electoral decisions based on real information at all.

Of course, if you're in favor of Trump, I imagine that's the point.
