UNSPOKEN

The screen of Irene’s phone glowed in the dim light of the room, the rain outside tapping against the window like impatient fingertips. The storm had swallowed the city hours ago, leaving only the soft hum of distant traffic and the quiet whirring of the old vent system above her.

She pressed play.

Sylus’s voice filled the room, low, warm, and rough around the edges in that way that told her he’d been pacing. Or brooding. Or both.

“…Mi Vida.”

A pause. A very long pause.

A quiet exhale through his nose, the faint rustle of him brushing a hand through his hair.

“…little hamster, you better not be laughing right now.”

He cleared his throat as if amused that he was using the nickname out loud but continued anyway.

“I was calling because... Well, because I had something to tell you.”

He absolutely didn’t. She could hear it in his voice.

“There was an auction today. Some collectors from the black market came in with artifacts, gemstones, useless things I don’t usually bother with…”

He cleared his throat casually, definitely overthinking the next words.

"They had this gemstone with luminous edges. It looked exactly like that relic from that game you’re always playing.”

“I bought it. Don’t ask the price.”

“…You’re welcome.”

Someone in the distance, Luke, shouted something about being “unstoppable,” followed immediately by a crash and Kieran groaning in defeat. Sylus sighed.

“As you can hear… the twins are still attempting their mutiny. They challenged me to combat again today.”

“I won, in case you doubted me. Which you shouldn’t.”

There was another pause, longer this time. Rain hit his side of the line, too.

“Linkon misses you. It’s been raining for days. Even Mephisto’s restless. He keeps tapping the window and looking around like he lost his partner in crime."

He inhaled slowly. The kind of breath he took when he was choosing his words carefully.

“Feels emptier than usual without you running around the place.”

The silence stretched, filled only by the sound of the rain on his end, stronger than the one outside her hotel. Then in almost a whisper, he spoke.

“…I suppose I might be doing the same.”

A chair creaked. He sat down.

“…Ah. Time zones.”

His tone shifted—equal parts annoyance at himself and fondness for her.

“You’re probably asleep right now, aren’t you, sweetie?”

She heard fabric rustle. Maybe he was leaning back.

“…I should let you rest.”

But he didn’t stop.

“When you come back…”

A pause. Quieter now.

“…I’ll pick you up from the airport. No arguing."

“With the rain, taxis will be overpriced and barely functioning. And I’m not letting you drag your suitcase through puddles.”

He exhaled, a low, tired sound she wasn’t used to hearing from him.

“If you need anything upon landing… just tell me before your flight. I’ll handle it.”

A silence stretched, almost like he didn’t want to hang up.

“…I seem to have been talking to myself longer than necessary.”

“Return soon, my little hamster.”

“I’ll see you when you’re back.”

BEEP.

The message ended. The silence in the room felt different now.

Irene let her phone fall to the bedspread, her heart thudding in her chest. He never said the words "I miss you"—but they clung to every pause, every inhale, every attempt to disguise the softness beneath his voice.

She stood, stretching, still absorbing the warmth of his message when...

Knock. Knock.

A sharp sound against the quiet hum of the storm.

Her breath stalled. The rain outside fell harder. The air shifted, charged, familiar.

She padded to the door, fingers curling around the handle.

The moment it clicked open, her heart dropped straight to her feet.

There he was.

Sylus.

Ashy silver hair pushed back haphazardly. Leaning casually against the doorframe, hands in the pockets of casual black trousers that alone probably cost more than her entire trip. A fitted sand-colored sweater hugged his chest and arms.

His red eyes flicked over her quickly, checking, relieved, and then he raised the phone in his hand and wiggled it once.

“Time zones...” he muttered with a faint huff.

She blinked, still trying to breathe properly. “You… you’re here. You said—the airport—”

He shrugged like it was obvious. “I got impatient.”

Mephisto sat perched on his shoulder, mechanical wings drooping pathetically as if it had been the one to fly across continents.

The rain behind him seemed to hush, waiting. He stepped forward slightly, not quite inside, not quite outside, eyes dropping to meet hers fully.

Then he exhaled, slow and soft, almost inaudible beneath the patter of rain.

“I forgot to tell you something in the voicemail,” he said, voice low, roughened by travel and restraint.

He stepped inside her doorway without touching her, without crowding, just close enough for her to feel the heat radiating off him, close enough for Mephisto to hop from his shoulder onto hers with a caw of delight.

Sylus’s gaze softened.

“I kept talking,” he murmured, thumb brushing a raindrop from his eyebrow, “and talking, and… apparently I still didn’t say the most important thing.”

His jaw flexed—Sylus, who never faltered, never hesitated.

“I missed you.”

The words weren’t dramatic. They weren’t wrapped in charm or dominance or theatrics.

They were quiet. Honest. A confession disguised as an inconvenience.

“… Can I come in, sweetie?”

Her answer came in a rush. “Yes.”

She stepped back, and he entered, bringing the scent of stormwind and home with him.

Behind her, the phone chimed again. Voicemail saved.

His hand shifted in his pocket, thumb brushing the fabric—an unconscious tell that he was more nervous than he looked. But then that familiar spark lit in his crimson eyes when he heard the chime, the corner of his mouth tugging into a smirk that was entirely Sylus.

“…Did you miss me too, mi vida? ”

Smug. A little self-satisfied. But behind it, yearning, hope, and an almost boyish uncertainty.

The question hovered between them, teasing, sheepish, and hopeful. A dragon forgetting how to hide his heart.

The soft rustle of leaves brushed against the windows as Sky moved around the apartment, the amber light of late afternoon spilling across the wooden floor. The music player hummed faintly in the corner, something low and warm, just background to the sound of footsteps in the kitchen and the occasional clink of metal.

It smelled like cinnamon. And sugar. And something faintly burnt.

“Xavier,” she called, leaning against the doorway. “Do I want to know what you’re doing?”

He froze mid-motion, his figure hunched over the counter like someone trying to hide a crime scene. When he looked up, there was icing streaked across his fingers, and a dent in the frosting that looked like… maybe a handprint.

“No casualties,” he said, voice calm as ever. “Except… possibly the counter.”

Sky crossed her arms. “Possibly?”

He looked down at the cake like he was negotiating with it. “…Definitely.”

The cake itself looked like something out of a fever dream — a round, slightly uneven shape layered in glossy caramel-colored icing that gleamed under the lights. It leaned just a little to the right. And on top of it, scattered like confused travelers, were tiny plastic decorations: a pumpkin, a Darth Vader figurine, a glittery Mickey Mouse head, and Nightwing holding a tiny paper leaf.

Her lips twitched despite herself. “What… theme is this supposed to be?”

Xavier’s expression didn’t change. “You,” he said simply. “I tried to make it reflect your interests. Fall. Stars. Fictional vigilantes. Animated animals.”

“You put all of them on one cake.”

“I didn’t want to leave anything out.”

Sky pressed a hand to her mouth, trying not to laugh. “You could’ve… I don’t know, picked one?”

“I did,” he said, serious. “All of them.”

That earned a quiet laugh from her — the kind that started in her chest and slipped through her smile before she could stop it. She stepped closer, tilting her head as she looked over the chaotic masterpiece. “It’s… actually kind of cute.”

He blinked, clearly surprised. “Cute?”

“Yeah.” She glanced at him. “You tried. your best. And that's what matters... and it does look cute.”

“I did more than try,” he murmured, rubbing the back of his neck. “I ran field tests. Delia, Star, and Miki all approved earlier batches. Before… this happened.”

“Field tests?” she echoed, amused.

He gave a slight shrug. “That’s what we call it when three people eat an entire cake to make sure it’s safe.”

She huffed a small laugh and reached for a knife. “Alright, then. Let’s see if it passes human inspection.”

They cut the cake together, her hand steady, his helping to guide it even though he clearly didn’t need to. When she lifted a slice onto a plate, the icing slid slightly down the edge, dripping like caramel paint. She took a forkful and tasted it, her expression thoughtful.

Xavier watched her like he was waiting for a mission report. “Verdict?”

Sky pretended to think about it for a long moment. “It’s… good. A little too sweet. But good.”

He nodded once, then took a bite himself—his face impassive, though the faint twitch of his jaw gave him away.

“Too sweet?” she asked.

He swallowed. “…Yes. I think the icing is the culprit. It didn't go through a field test... first it was liquidy... and now it is sugary...”

She smiled despite the cake being a little too sweet for her liking. “Still edible, though.” She took another bite.

“Barely,” he said, setting the fork down. He looked at her then ,quiet, steady, something warm flickering behind his usual calm. “You look happy,” he said softly.

Sky’s smile gentled. “I am.”

For a moment, the world just slowed—the hum of the music player, the dim golden light, the smell of sugar and cinnamon lingering between them.

Xavier reached out, his thumb brushing a faint smear of icing from the corner of her lip. “Happy birthday, Sky.” His voice dropped, quieter, like he was trying to steady something inside himself. “Where I come from, we don’t really celebrate days like this. There’s no time for them. No one to share them with. So… thank you. For letting me.”

She looked at him—him finally opening up always struck her more deeply than poetry ever could. “You didn’t have to go this far, a simple present would have been just fine,” she said quietly.

He tilted his head slightly. “Maybe not. But I wanted to.”

Her chest tightened. She didn’t reply, she just reached for his hand and squeezed.

He hesitated only a second before pulling her gently closer, his hand resting against the small of her back. His forehead brushed hers. “In all the worlds I’ve seen, I never thought I’d find a sky worth falling toward. Happy Birthday, Skylar..."

Her breath caught. She exhaled softly. “You’re not bad at this, you know.”

“At what?”

“Being human.”

He gave the faintest, crooked smile, reserved for her but real. “That’s because you’re a good teacher. And if I had to cross the stars again, I’d still choose this orbit. The one that ends here. With you.”

Her breath caught again, the words soft but heavy in the air. He always spoke like that—simple, unembellished, but it hit her anyway. Because he meant it. Every word. “You really need to stop saying things like that,” she whispered. “You’re going to make me—”

“Feel?” he asked gently, the corner of his mouth barely lifting.

She gave a small, helpless laugh. “Yeah. That.”

He leaned in then, closing the distance. His lips met hers, like the autumn wind rustling through leaves. It wasn’t clumsy, but it wasn’t perfect either. It was slow—hesitant at first, like he was still calibrating how much he was allowed to want. His hand slid to the small of her back, grounding her, while hers curled into his sleeve. The warmth of it spread between them, familiar and new all at once. The world tilted, narrowed to the soft press of his lips and the faint scent of cinnamon on his shirt.

When he finally drew back, his ears were tinged pink. He turned his head slightly, clearing his throat and covering his mouth with his hand. His cheeks were faintly red; his voice, lower now, threaded with a rasp she’d only hear in specific situations. “We should go,” he said quietly. “Before I forget what time really is.”

She blinked, still dazed. “What?”

“We should… put a bookmark here,” he muttered. “Continue after the party. Otherwise Nymeria and Kaia will find out you missed your celebration because of me... and they will never let it go... they will kill me."

Sky gave him a flat look, though her eyes sparkled. “A bookmark?”

“Yes,” he said seriously. “To mark… continuity.”

“You’re impossible.”

He gestured toward the coffee table. “Your gifts are there,” he said. “But…”

His tone shifted, lower, intimate, the kind of timbre that made her pulse trip. He leaned in, close enough that his breath stirred the loose strands of her hair, his voice brushing her ear. “I dressed up well so you can unwrap your real present later.”

Heat flooded her face instantly. She froze, shoulders stiff, eyes wide. “¡Dios mío, Xavier!” she blurted, the words sharp but her voice too flustered to hold the edge. “You can’t just—!”

He blinked innocently, though his mouth curved the faintest bit. “Can’t what?”

“You know what,” she said, glaring or trying to. It lacked any real venom. “You’re lucky you’re cute.”

His mouth curved further, just enough to show he was pleased with himself. “I’ll take that as permission.”

She sighed, turning back toward the cake, trying to hide her smile. “We’re cutting another slice before we go. Because you’re not living this down if I faint halfway to Linkonland.”

“Agreed” he said, moving to stand beside her again, his shoulder brushing hers.

They finished their slices side by side, the lamplight painting constellations in the reflection of his eyes. Outside, the wind whispered through the half-bare trees, carrying the scent of rain.

For now, the universe could wait. Because tonight, in her small apartment, over a ridiculous cake and stolen kiss, the traveler and his Sky had found their own quiet galaxy and he would always orbit around her.
