rai only revealing to his closest friends that he can fly - so no one else knows.

so when he gets to like some kind of scuffle with a villain or something, he tries to make sure it’s somewhere high (preferably a rooftop). if he needs to, he can then drive the fight off of the roof; they both plummet, panicking, until rai eventually gives the other a shit-eating grin and slows his descent. the same can’t be said for his enemy >:) unless he shows mercy and slows them down too

rai’s powers/abilities and how far they go

NOTE: some of these are verse-dependent. he gets more powerful after reaching shoku warrior level, and steadily builds more skills.

he could suck the wind out of someone’s lungs if he wanted to, though it would take a lot of focus. just straight up remove their oxygen. bye felicia

he can literally fly. it’s hard though, especially sustained flight. it takes a lot of energy and a lot of focus, which is why he can’t always do it out of the blue (he’s still vulnerable to falling from heights a lot of the time). if he has a surge of emotion, like anger, it’s easier to fly spontaneously but it won’t last long

he has increased speed and strength, by using air to help him lift heavy things and to propel him forwards faster

he can alter air pressure. this one takes him a long time to realise - it’s quite a fine art and very subtle. he alter air pressure accidentally due to emotional states before he even realises he can do it. in theory, if he was focused enough and had the energy/strength, he could manipulate the pressure and actually crush someone

he has heightened senses - he can hear things from further away by manipulating the air density and movement which could allow sound, for example, to travel further

using the same method as the above, he can throw his voice farther than most, whether it’s a shout or a whisper

he can hold his breath longer than most, making underwater adventures a little easier

he can oxidise things

the more obvious things that i should mention anyway, like generation of gusts of wind, tornadoes, potentially even a small hurricane if he had the energy and focus (more likely to happen if he was incredibly angry or had a really good reason to create one)

he definitely uses his wind powers to aid his surfing. he generates bigger waves for himself and uses wind to help him balance

i mean, in general, he definitely uses wind to help him balance sometimes. i can imagine him also using it to fix his hair and mess up other people’s

he can and does move clouds outta the way but he always gets in trouble with master fung/dojo when he tries to mess with the weather

he likes to keep the full extent of his capabilities on the down low. that way, he can use the whole ‘people underestimate me constantly’ thing to his advantage and out-manoeuvre his opponents with the element of surprise

I JUST REALISED I NEVER PUBLICLY SAID THIS ANYWHERE

okay so i hc that, in addition to their elemental powers, all the monks have a slightly heightened tolerance for pain and injuries. that is, they can bounce back from things a little quicker than usual and can take more hits. they just... keep getting back up. for example, that final battle with rai against chase, guan, wuya and hannibal? he lands hard on his head twice, is thrown into a brick wall several times, has his back torn at by chase’s claws, honestly probably broke a bone or two (at least) etc... but he gets up and keeps going. okay, that’s probably just because it’s a cartoon but i gotta have this making sense shfhfhhd. so... yeah. a mixture of in-built damage resistance that comes with their elemental powers, and adrenaline mid-battle keeps these dudes going strong

can’t stop thinking about how rai is biologically different to other humans. he actually has a fair amount in common with marine mammals, which helps him withstand changes in atmospheric pressure as well as changes in the air structure and potentially oxygen availability:

increased levels of myoglobin in his muscles (for efficient storage of oxygen - handy for if he’s messing with the air)

able to undergo vasoconstriction and reduced perfusion at will (basically, oxygen delivery is reduced in organs that can function with reduced oxygen for a while; oxygenated blood goes to the vital organs (brain and heart) which CAN’T function without it). he can also lower his heart rate. because of the reduced perfusion, myoglobin and reduced heart rate, his metabolic rate lowers which means he can survive on limited oxygen for longer than a regular human

his ribcage can partially collapse, allowing him to withstand pressure changes (more than the average human but not as much as diving mammals)

increased pressure can lead to more nitrogen being absorbed into the blood, which is toxic and can lead to nitrogen narcosis. marine mammals deal with this by having blubber, which helps absorb nitrogen. rai doesn’t have blubber, but certain spaces in his body are able to absorb nitrogen to some extent, keeping it away from the bloodstream

he has to be careful to change pressures slowly, or he will also suffer from decompression sickness
