views like these,
Technically still the first week.
Motueka.
A small place near the Able Tasman Nature reserve. And our first chance at some really nice weather.
The campsite here was quite posh, and out site was nice and sheltered under a couple of tree to keep the can cool in the shade and enough space for us to sit and sunbath.
We headed down to the sea and went for a wander along a spit of land. It was very windy and there sand hot under our feet. There was driftwood everyone and someone had made a little house out of some of the bigger pieces. Perfect backdrop for some photos.
We did have a lite trouble getting back to shore as the tide had snuck up behind us but luckily the water wasn’t too deep.
Some locals in Nelson wondered why we bothered to stop there but we found it nice enough, especially with the added bonus of the nice weather.
So only a couple nights there.
On to the next place.
Nelson, well Richmond really as we couldn’t find a site at a reasonable price which could accommodate us for the 8 nights we’re here. (currently hiding in Richmond library using there lovely free WiFi :p)
It was only half an hour between motueka and Richmond so we drove the extra 20mins into Nelson city centre for a look around and a visit to the i-Site to check out what to do.
The sun was out again, struggling through some cloud but it was warm and not raining.
We had a quick look round a market going on before heading back to camp.
Later that night though we headed back into Nelson for a Lantern Festival held at the geographical center of New Zealand, atop a hill.
The steep trek up was dotted with people and installations dressed as fairies and book characters with buskers acting as sprites and lanterns hanging around.
The path lead to the top were everyone gathered to watch the sun set and be entertained by a couple of clowns and musicians.
It was very good night and I am glad we went, as I had only spotted a notice about it earlier in the day at the i-Site.
However we did have trouble once we headed back to the van to go back to camp.
Our key is quite old so it can which was made in a time Toyota decided to install a different type of lock tumbler for some unknown reason which are renowned for having problems.
As we found out.
Our key no longer turned in the ignition. Or the driver door for that fit. Luckily I could unlock the passenger side door (but locking doesn’t work that side either)
So after calls to NZ roadside a wonderfully helpful chap called Gavin came out to tow up back to camp to sleep so we could sort the key out at a later time.
Needless to say after the event ended at 10pm and the debacle with the van we didn’t get back till late and had an early start the next day.
We had book a day kayaking in the sea around the Able Tasman. A utterly exhausting (and my case queasy) experience which was amazing. We did have to get swapped around as we’re were certainly not the best or most powerful paddlers of the group bit we carried on.
There was a time in the middle at lunch when we stopped off at the gorgeous little beach that I thought about quitting. I was feeling quite sorry for myself, tired, sick, sore and hurting.
But after some food, and a cup of traditional maori tea made from leaves our instructor plucked from a near by tree, we made it to the end of our day landing at another white sanded beach.
We ate definitely going to try and get back there.
I did feel sick, I did feel tired, but looking at the map and seeing how far we went, getting to see seals up close and managing to go the whole day, I can definitely say I am proud of myself and Hannah.
(I must note that we had booked one of the smaller tours, only going around Kaiteriteri Bay, but I think there wasn’t enough people for that particular tour so they tagged us onto another much longer tour, so we were kinda through into the deep end)
The next day was spent lazy around in the sun watch the poor locksmith NZ roadside got for us to to fix the van, which required alot of taking apart of very fiddly locks to get the thing to work.
But it is fixed now, our mobile abode in on the road again. We were quite lucky that this happened at a time we were staying out for a time and not moving about every other day, giving us chance to actually fix the van and not loose out or get behind.
Day after that was spent in Nelson again visiting the provincial museum and WW1 exhibition, the cathedral which was hosting an Christmas tree festival and the local cinema to finally see the last installment of the Hobbit trilogy.
Yesterday (Wednesday for us), I think, was one of the best experiences we have had here. Hannah doesn’t hold it as in such high regard as me, bit I am quite a crafty, creative being.
We had booked a bone carving lesson at the home of a German man by the name of Stephan.
We got to design, cut and carve our very own necklaces centre pieces from cow bone, from beginning to end.
Stephan was an excellent teacher, helping everyone on our group, regardless of ability to create unique and beautiful pieces of our own design.
I still look at mine and find it hard to believe I actually made that.
We made sure to take photos along the way to show the process of the pieces getting cut out, smoothed, buffed and shined.
A totally different and unique experience that gives and insight into the craft of carving bone.
If you ever in Nelson I would highly suggest booking a session with Stephan.
Today it is raining so after this we’re heading the World of Wearable art and classic car museum.
Hiking Able Tasman National Park
Hiking Able Tasman National Park
Everyone told me you HAVE to hike Able Tasman National Park and I am so glad I did. The park has many hikes from day hikes to multi day hikes. You can take a water taxi to different parts of the park if you want to start or stop at different places.
I did the day hike. It was wonderful. It was not hard at all meaning there were no big hills. It was pretty flat the whole way. The only thing was…
