when the student is doing the professor's job
i'm all for collaboration and never being too old to learn... but this is her job, what she got her doctorate in. and it's not like this information i brought to light is NEW - it's not. if the whole APAS department knows this information, why doesn't she have this base-level knowledge? we're talking about race and ethnic relations, but she's spinning it to leave out crucial details which would lead the class to a full understanding of Asian Americans and the model minority MYTH. from the sound of her lecture on it, it sounded like she actually bought INTO the model minority stereotype as well! which is! RIDICULOUS??!! it's a 200 level class but come ON.
i can't be spending my time and energy on explaining shit to her and my discussion board full of peers, i actually have important work to do about my internship presentation for Wednesday
that is only a small part of my issue with her not knowing her shit. out of this whole class about, again, race and ethnic relations - Pacific Islander Americans are COMPLETELY AND THOROUGHLY IGNORED. in her lecture AND in the book. we are only mentioned when talking about the aggregate API population ("5% of the population but very diverse!!1!!") why would the book mention PI Americans once only to never delve into who we are?? wouldn't that be a fundamental error in the writing like???? we have covered African Americans, Native Americans, Latinx Americans, Asian Americans, and are about to go into Arab Americans and then the last week is "New Immigrants" which include a few more specific ethnic groups not delved into in previous weeks. No. PACIFIC. ISLANDERS. AT. ALL. zero. i emailed her about it incredibly civilly and even attached that NHPI report by EPIC/AAJC and she proceeded to be enthusiastic and appreciate my suggestion, but i'm to find an appropriate documentary in a week. which might not be too big a deal... i know she's busy as a professor but i am also busy as a student? i'm happy she didn't shoot me down but how am i supposed to pick one documentary to choose within a week...?? and idek how she would put in new info about PI Americans for next week's lecture?? i just have really conflicting feelings about this and it's distressing
