Today, October 11, is Indigenous People’s Day! I celebrate this holiday by recognizing and honoring the vibrant culture, heritage, and history of all Indigenous people! Following up, I want to say that Columbus didn’t discover anything. You can’t discover what’s already here!! I grew up never celebrating “Christopher Columbus Day”. For my family (specifically Father side, Mother side we don’t know in terms of Native roots), with my Cherokee roots and or ancestry, we take pride in celebrating Indigenous People and all that they’ve done in this land both past and present. We try to do our best in respecting and maintaining this land appropriately and teaching the young and old how to appreciate, respect and do more for this land through generations. Just like last year, take the time to educate yourself on Native/Indigenous People’s history and culture. RESPECTFULLY!!! I can’t stress that enough. Please be respectful of what your learning and sharing with others! Again, Happy Indigenous People’s Day!!!!

Why People Are Celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day Instead of Columbus Day

And it’s “Peoples,” not “People’s,” FYI.

Columbus was mass murderer, torturer, rapist, a genocidal monster and one of the key people who started genocides of millions of Indigenous peoples in the Americas as well as the transAtlantic slave trade.  People need to stop celebrating him and start celebrating those who survived the genocide and those who resisted, as well as remembering those whose lives/cultures/ways of living were lost.  And part of that is taking steps to support Indigenous rights now and working against genocide of Indigenous people that is still happening now.

Happy Indigenous People’s Day!!! As someone who is proud of her Black with Cherokee Native ancestry, please try and remember that this is stolen land that we are living on and we need to respect and cherish this land that Natives live and thrive on!! Christopher Columbus didn’t discover anything!!! You can’t discover something that was already here with people who lived and flourished here!!!!! Just because you didn’t know whose land this is and the people who lived here doesn’t mean you DISCOVERED it!!! We need to RESPECT Natives as this is their lands!! This land was TAKEN from them and they want their land back! As they should! Please take the time today and perhaps your life, to learn about natives and how we can help them!!! Thank you! ✊🏾🙏🏾
