yknow The City and The City by China Miéville? The way that there were people & places of two different cities all jumbled up together, and they must never interact. You mustn't make eye contact with the citizen from the other city, or step into a building from the city that you don't belong to. The consequences of crossing the invisible lines were instant and terrifying.

Anyway, that's colonial australia. A land with two sets of place names. two claims of ownership. two kinds of meaning imposed on the same landscape. The world of white australia built on top of and over first nations land. A practice of othering, of non-seeing and not interacting with the "other" world. Aboriginal people & Aboriginal land still existing and resisting, despite colonial efforts of genocide, but only occasionally allowed to impinge on the colonial project.

I haven't read Miéville for a decade, maybe this kind of commentary is in the book and I simply don't remember. Maybe we all live in The City and The City each and every day that we live on stolen land.
