Conference delegates identify best practices in attracting, retaining more Aboriginal students

At the recent Conference on Indigenous Issues in Post-Secondary Education at Queen's University, more than 150 educators and Aboriginal leaders identified best practices in attracting and retaining more Aboriginal students and considered how these practices can be more broadly applied across institutions. Resources identified for supporting Aboriginal students in higher education include a safe, secure, and welcoming campus to help Aboriginal students better transition; incorporating Aboriginal ways of knowing into the curriculum and hiring more Aboriginal faculty and staff; and PSE institutions building trusting relationships with Aboriginal communities. Aboriginal Students See Substantial Increase in cliches

MOU is DOA.

Recently, there was something of a buzz here in Atlantic Canada over a new memorandum of agreement among universities and First Nations. Media reports called the MOU “historic” and implied that it would begin a new era that would see a swell of participation in higher education among Aboriginal Canadians in the Atlantic region.

If the reports could be believed, the news would be very good indeed. It is no secret after all, that while many aboriginals have excelled at the highest levels of education, as a group, Aboriginal Canadians are less likely than Canadians in general to attend university and to earn university degrees. According to this AUCC report, only 8 per cent of Native Canadians complete university, and this Statscan report shows how aboriginal women have educational attainment rates well below non-aboriginal women. And since university education has the real benefits of broader knowledge and sharper skills, as well as other vaguely imagined values that might also sway an employer or lending agency, higher education can be one way to ameliorate the poverty that disproportionately affects many aboriginals...

BC invests in UVic's LE,NONET Project

The BC government announced Friday $250,000 in one-time funding to support programs and research aimed at helping Aboriginal students at the University of Victoria succeed in their post-secondary studies. Funded by the federal government, the LE,NONET Project emerged out of a national interest in increasing PSE graduation rates for Aboriginal people and UVic's long-standing commitment to Aboriginal education. Operating at UVic between 2005 and 2009, LE,NONET students experienced a 100% increase in term-to-term retention, a 20% increase in graduation rates, and a 67% reduction in withdrawal rates. UBC, UVic develop Web portals focusing on Aboriginal community

The University of British Columbia has launched a microsite with an emphasis on video to highlight the growing number of programs and opportunities for Aboriginal students and scholars at the institution. The UBC Aboriginal Portal provides a single online destination to learn about the university's Aboriginal student services, academic programs, research community, and outreach programs. The University of Victoria's Virtual Learning Lodge is an evolving Web space featuring online training and live-streaming to Indigenous communities. The portal is designed to support the success of both distance and on-campus Aboriginal learners at UVic through connection to home communities, to each other, and to the institution. Report reviews literature on Aboriginal students' transitions to PSE

Given the importance of an educated Aboriginal population, the Canadian Education Statistics Council sponsored a literature review to identify key research findings relating to the challenges facing Aboriginal people as they transition from their K-12 years to PSE. The review observes the barriers to completing PSE for Aboriginal people are widely recognized and acknowledged, but persist. This persistence reflects a combination of factors, such as deeply ingrained philosophical approaches about PSE. In taking action to improve PSE outcomes, the report states, solutions must reflect and respond to differences between and within First Nations, Métis, and Inuit populations. The review says more data, research, and evaluation are needed to have a better understanding of the efficacy of various approaches being used to improve Aboriginal PSE outcomes. Read the report
