More mounts to do!! I’m going to try and hide mount them too 🦌🌲❤️ I always love seeing the age of the deer with the teeth too 🌲🦌
So after salt tanning for eleven days, it seems like my fallow fawn hide experiment has been a success!
In case you missed the original post, a couple of weeks ago, I found a couple of fresh(ish) hunter-dumped skins at the pine plantation and one was in pretty good condition, so I brought it home, cleaned it up, and had a go at salt tanning (obvs).
My Google research said to salt for ten days, but we had a busy time Friday and over the weekend so I didn’t get to it until this afternoon. I tipped the salt off and gave it a brush down, and there’s no butcher’s shopp-y smell left, in fact it smells like my dog Galahad after he’s had a trip to the beach! (My boyfriend came out to see how it was going and found me with my nose practically buried in the skin side, whatcha gonna do?)
I started out on the hairy side with a grooming mitt, then after I was pretty sure the hair was going to stay put, I gave it a good firm brush with my other dog Skorgee’s slicker brush. Some of the hair came out, of course, but not in clumps or anything. It’s beautifully thick and soft.
I’ll trim the few raggedy pieces off the edges, but I’m going to keep the lighter piece (hip/rump section) at the top right of the picture because I love the gradation of colour rather than making it symmetrical.
I got two very special gifts for Christmas this year, two white-tailed deer hides from my father. One was from the last buck my grandfather shot before he passed away, and the other was from the buck my father shot the year after my grandfather passed. I’m so honored that my father was willing to give these to me, I know they mean a lot to him.
~Also quick disclaimer about hunting, these bucks were taken in Wisconsin where deer are often a nuisance animal. They were taken legally in season.~
Oh deer
Got to make my own deer hide drum today. Dyed with stain made from black walnut husks.
