☆✧ brie larson, 27, female, she/her ⋙ keep the cameras focused, claire james (but call her CJ!) has just arrived !! she is originally from venice beach, calif. and in everyday life she works as a semi-pro surfer and a part-time smoothie extraordinaire/barista during the off season. she likes to describe herself as outgoing, a smooth-talker, and viciously over-protective of her friends, but we’ve heard she can also be rather jealous and shamelessly petty. when asked, her aesthetics are bright smiles, holding hands, moonlit nights, bonfires on the beach, driving with the top down, and jean shorts with white tees. we can already tell CJ is going to be a great addition to the cast !! * — growing up at the heart of venice beach, claire james naturally gravitated to the water. and with a professional surfer as a father, it was hard to ever want anything else. by 16, claire had already secured her first sponsorship — a $5000 stipend partnered with surfboard accessories, and some new digs to wear while out on the water. 

*— her competitive nature made her a strong contender, propelling her to the top spot on any team roster. for the longest time, it seemed like there would be no end to claire’s upward trajectory, but as high school came to an end and college became the backdrop, claire fumbled. 

*— between falling in love with multiple girls, breaking up and allowing the heartbreak to keep her out of the water, her performance suffered. while girls on her team were out practicing, cj dedicated her time to partying. it showed when competitive season came along; first place turned to third place, turned to tenth place, until sponsorships were dropped.

*— in a moment of freakout, cj dropped all her college courses and moved back to her parent’s home. definitely overstaying her welcome, it took some tough love to finally get her out on the water. (tough love meaning her parents literally gave her an eviction notice to get her shit together!)

*— she eventually reached out to a girl on her surf team for a place to stay in hawaii to train. though she’s nowhere near the level she was at her prime, cj’s had a bit of a wake up call and is ready to get serious about her career. if she’ll ever be able to separate her personal life from her job, she’d be a champion, but it’s obvious to any coach that she lets what’s outside effect the inside. 

*— getting the invite to join sleepover came as a surprise to cj, as she had applied during a time that she was at her brokest, hoping for a big break. the fact that the show takes place in bahamas was the driving factor of cj’s decision, meaning she could have fun and have access to the beach.

*— FUN FACTS:

she’s not very traveled, but she has visited a lot of beach-side locations for surfing

costa rica is her favorite place to surf

she’s a mean cook, and her signature recipe is gnocchi

*— it wasn’t until she met her ex-girlfriend at UCLA that her performance began to suffer. obsessed with anything and everything related to being in love (read: infatuated), claire lost herself in a woman who was just as greedy and demanding for her attention. it was clear to everyone around them (especially her teammate Coyote) that this ex was bad news, toying with cj’s emotions

*— while the rest of girls on her team were out practicing, cj dedicated her time to partying with said ex girlfriend, who had no qualms about cj’s failing career so long as they were “together.” it showed when competitive season came along; first place turned to third place, turned to tenth place, until sponsorships were dropped.

*— because cj never imagined the relationship coming to an end, the definite breakup (the girl said she was simply bored of dating cj, and already dating someone else) hit claire hard.

*— in a moment of freakout, cj dropped all her college courses and moved back to her parent’s home in venice beach. definitely overstaying her welcome, it took some tough love to finally get her out on the water. (tough love meaning her parents literally gave her an eviction notice to get her shit together!)

*— she reached out to her ex-teammate (who cj had ditched earlier in the season for “love”) coyote for a place to stay and train again.

*— because she’s nowhere near the level she was at her prime, nowadays, claire enjoys the luxury (and freedom) of owning a small business. while she has since returned to surfing professionally, it’s less of a definitive career and more of a hobby.

ESTABLISHED CONNECTIONS:

coyote and cj’s surf shop: while on acid, cj and coyote (two girls with way too much sponsorship money to know what to do with) came up with the grand idea of purchasing the small space that had been vacant for years on venice boardwalk, converting it into a surf, merch and smoothie stop.

retrograde: in the same breath, on another day, when aidan spoke out loud about wanting to build a safe space for their little lesbian community they built, it was a no brainer to invest in her idea of re-building “The Planet” lesbian bar that been out of business for the last 5 years and re-shaping it into “Retrograde”

FUN FACTS:

she’s a hardworker, but only when /she/ wants to be. often, she can be found working random shifts around retrograde and the surf shop, annoying the other employees by leaving when the rush gets bad and letting them fend for themselves (perks of being an owner, right?

CJ’s full name is Christina Jane Jareau. Her sister Roslyn called her Christi Jane, which became the nickname that everyone used for her. When Roslyn died (CJ was 3), she would cry whenever anyone else called her Christi Jane, which is why JJ came up with CJ instead. JJ sometimes calls her Christi Jane, but only if she’s really worried or angry
