Rambling about Morrowind and TES
Some people mod Morrowind with badass armor and weapons and overpowered player homes.
I look for mods that tackle issues of slavery and religious intolerance.
You know, just the fact that Morrowind even had such themes for people to flesh out mods around makes me feel like it's superior to the later games, despite advancements in graphics and gameplay. Especially Skyrim where everybody and their mother seems racist as a matter of course and it's just accepted as a fact of life and you just go around killing dragons for a prophecy but that's never examined either... In Skyrim you're forced to go along with a lot of things that make me feel uneasy, no matter which side you're on. It just feels like later TES games are gradually losing the depth and imagination and characterisation and ability to choose your character's course of action that made me fall in love with the series. Which is weird, actually, because I felt like Fallout 3 was far more philosophically engaging than Oblivion was, and Fallout 3 came out after Oblivion did.
I really don't know where I'm going with this. I guess I just hope that when Bethesda works on their next TES game, they at least attempt to flesh it out as well as they did Morrowind. I'm especially excited for a game set in Elsweyr, because we haven't gotten to see much of Khajiiti culture yet, and I would really like to see a game where if you play as a humanoid race, you get some serious culture shock. And also maybe a little backlash from suspicious natives, but without making them seem like elitist douchewads like the Dunmer. I've always thought native Khajiit would be more accepting of outsiders once they'd proved themselves. After all, once you get on their good side, they say things like "May you walk on warm sands" and I just love that. The fun part of a game set in Elsweyr would be proving yourself and learning about their culture. Well, for me, anyway. I suppose that's why I like Morrowind so much, since that's basically what you do with the Ashlander tribes in the main quest. But I'd like a more mundane approach than the whole spiritual/religious reincarnation thing.
Wow, can you tell I'm bored and don't have anyone to talk about this to? XD
