To be a man, watched by women. It must be entirely strange. To have them watching him all the time. To have them wondering, What’s he going to do next? To have them flinch when he moves, even if it’s a harmless enough move, to reach for an ashtray perhaps. To have them sizing him up.
The Handmaid’s Tale, by Margaret Atwood
Power is paradoxical.
Friedrich Durrenmatt
Reflecting on the Civil Rights Movement
The Civil Rights Movement relied on white violence to draw media attention, relied on media to capture and disseminate images of violence and abuse across the country, thus stirring the concern of middle class northern white moderates who would then, in turn put (much needed) pressure on southern whites (because outside pressure was needed)
In this, we learn:
- outside pressure and concern is needed to agitate action
- Black leaders agitated, then used white to combat white
- always use Power to combat Power
