🔪- A memory about a dangerous situation
It was the same camping site they’d camped at every Fall Breaksince Finn had gone off to college. It was Finn’s way of reminding his kidbrother that he wasn’t ever too far away or too busy to see him. That Fall wasthe start of Finn’s senior year of college. He was twenty-two and Patrick was seventeen, just starting his Junior year of high school. It was the perfect week- just thetwo of them, hiking, kayaking, goofing off and swimming in the lake. ByThursday the beautiful weather they’d been enjoying turned sour. The rain wascold and came down in steady heavy sheets. Finn awoke late in the morning butit was dark and grey outside. Patrick’s sleeping bag was empty. Always theconcerned protector, Finn quickly pulled on a t-shirt and clambered out of thetent, phone in hand. He searched the camp site, the car, the outhouse, anywherehe could think of, but there was no sign of his brother. Panic rising in hischest he dialed 911, informing them of his location and that his brother wasmissing. He set out along the mountain path, calling his brother’s name. Abouta half mile down there came an answer. It was almost inaudible due to thepouring rain, but Finn could’ve picked his voice out anywhere. Finn rushed tothe edge of the path, seeing that there was a drop just behind the trees. Helooked over the drop off and his breath caught in his throat, it was a roughrocky incline, dropping hundreds of feet down to a stream. Patrick was clingingto the rockside about forty feet down. His red hair looked dark with what wascertainly blood.
“Hang on, I’m coming down to get you!” Finn frantically torehis backpack from his back, pulling out the length of rope and scrambling tofasten it to a tree. It was only a forty foot rope, the end hung about sevenfeet above his brother’s head. Finn tore a waterproof flare out of his pack andsnapped it, tossing it back towards the path and praying that whoever came tofind them would be able to see it. He moved quickly rappelling down therockface towards his shivering brother. “Patrick! Grab hold of my hand!” Themuscular college student reached his right hand down for his kid brother, stretching his arm span to its limits. Their fingertips brushed once, twice, butPatrick couldn’t reach him. “Jump up!” Finn called out, tightening his grip onthe rope. “But...If I miss I might not catch myself!” The panic in hisbrother’s voice was warranted, the rocks were slick, but they were running outof time. Patrick was soaked through and clearly injured, and the cold rain was freezing Finn’s hands. If they didn’t get up the cliff-sidefast he was going to lose his grip on the rope and they’d both be in trouble. “You have to jump now, Patrick. Now!” Theyoung man grimaced in concern for a moment, but then he launched himself up thoseprecious few inches and Finn’s hand closed around his wrist. The immediate painsent a scream tearing from Finn’s lungs. Fire shot from his outstretched arm upacross his chest. He felt something in his right shoulder tear and he nearlylost his hold on his brother. Thankfully Patrick was already gripping his olderbrother’s arm with both hands. “Finn! Fuck, what happened? Finn!” The high schooler wasfrantically trying to find footing, but with the stone slick from rain, hecouldn’t keep in any one place for long. “Stop!”Finn cried out, eyes screwed shut. “Stop moving, Pat!” He was sick with painnow, but he had to hold on, he could hear the sirens of the rescue team pullingup to the cliff.
The rescue team pulled Finn and Patrick up within minutes, a middle-agedfirefighter pulling Finn up on to solid ground as the other wrapped his brotherin a blanket and hurried him to their truck. Finn’s right arm hung motionlessby his side, his face grey. The man who’d helped him was spreading a blanket across Finn’sshoulders but Finn couldn’t feel the warmth. He felt like the world was slowlymoving away from him as the adrenaline of the situation left him and exhaustion and pain set in. “You’re a courageous young man, you know that?” The older man smiled, clearly trying to comfort youngFinn and lighten the situation. Finn nodded with grit teeth. His legs gave outsuddenly and his eyes rolled back in his head as a soft groan left hislips. He slumped hard against the stranger who was prepared enough to catchhim before he hit the ground. “Jesus, kid!” The man gently set him down and immediately recognized whatwas wrong. “Shit…” He looked up to the other firefighter with a frown, “Jerry, call for twoincoming, this one’s hurt too. Looks like a separated shoulder, possible jointtear.” The men loaded Finn in the truck with his brother. Finn had moments ofconsciousness where he could hear Patrick’s voice, but he didn’t wake up fully untilhe was comfortably in a hospital bed with his arm in a sling and only the bandages from his shoulder surgery left to remind him of what had gone wrong. Patrick was safe and that was all that mattered to him.
Consequences//Self-Para
His hands ran nervously up and down his thighs as the warden sat in silence, filling out some sort of paperwork. Finn had tried to catch a glimpse of what the man was writing, but with one eye starting to swell and his head still foggy, he couldn’t make out much. “Martin.” The warden finally snapped and Finn realized he’d been spacing out and staring at the wall . He lowered his head humbly and then glanced up at his boss. “Yes sir?” The warden picked up the papers he’d been working on and straightened them, tapping them lightly on the desk. He handed them to Finn along with a black pen. “I’ve reviewed your report of the incident as well as your co-worker’s and Mr. Sullivan’s. While I understand that he is a high-risk patient and was being insubordinate and physically defiant, your actions did not follow protocol. You have been instructed to use force necessary only to detain and bring the patient down to solitary. Not” The warden’s voice was sharper here and it made Finn’s stomach turn. “to take your personal anger out on the patient as you did today. That was a serious breach of our policies.” “Yes sir.” Finn nodded, trying his best to read the papers in front of him.
“I am giving you an unpaid two day suspension, Mr. Martin. As well as docking your pay for today, and requiring that you speak to one of our therapists once a week to avoid any future incidents.” Finn looked up with shock on his face. “But sir-“ The warden’s face was stern. “I won’t take any protests. This is for your own good and for the good of the institute. This action cannot go unpunished.” Finn bit his lower lip and looked down, trying not to show how upset he was with himself. Shit. A suspension? He lived here though. He’d have to leave the property. He didn’t have anywhere else to go. How was he going to explain this to the other staff? Would they think he was within reason or would they doubt his stability? Fuck, what was Casey going to say?
“I understand, sir.” Finn nodded, though he could feel the emotion rushing to his face. He signed his name at the bottom of the page and handed it back to his boss. The warden took it and sighed, his eyes a little more sympathetic now that he’d noticed how upset Finn was. “Gather your things, Finnegan, and check out in the office. You can start back for your midday shift on Sunday. And try not to be too hard on yourself. It happens more often than you’d think. You’re still one of our best.” Finn nodded and cast his head down as he stood and walked from the office to his room without looking at or speaking to anyone. His eye was deeply bruised and swollen now, and his face and knuckles still bloodied. He knew he’d be drawing some stares but he couldn’t handle any questions at the moment. He got to his room and slipped inside, locking the door and sliding down to his knees. His hands were shaking. He reached up and knotted them in his hair as he fought back the impending tears. He was an awful person. A brute with no self-control. He shouldn’t have given in to Miles’ goading. He should’ve just walked away, even after he’d been tripped. He was supposed to be stronger than this. He couldn’t help these people. He couldn’t help anyone. He rose to his feet, feeling a sort of hollow numbness wash over him. He silently packed a few days worth of clothes in his backpack and left his room, walking down to the office to sign himself out, his head cast low and lost in his thoughts.
