I am trying to find an art style that would be easy to animate, and I really wanted to illustrate that moment in Absolution that was stuck in my head and lived rent free in my mind and didn’t let me sleep (ngl the whole sequence with the rabbits is stuck).
Maybe I’ll de a v2 with some rabbits on the ground we will see ✨
A chicken. Fuck Whitby. Fuck Whitby's chicken. Just... fuck all of that. But Lowry thought about the chicken, without a contamination suit on, navigating that dank corridor from the Border to AAX, fuck, and some small part of him wept over that fucking chicken's terror.
On one hand Whitby Allen is a freaky little weirdo guy with a silly little creepy attic, on the other hand, he's SO tragic! Whitby Allen who has seemingly been haunted by Area X since his childhood (based off of his interaction with The Rogue as a kid). Whitby who bathed and cared for that mouse so carefully and gently. Whitby who was found by Control having a complete breakdown in the storage closet. Whitby who actually at one point wanted to show Control the attic, who maybe thought Control could help or at least could be trusted with the knowledge of the attic. Whitby who was asked by Gloria to remain at the Southern Reach, to stay, to document it's corruption and fall. And (presuming he was indeed The Rogue and I understood all the crazy Rogue lore correctly) Whitby out of time, in the past, trying again and again, reliving the ground zero of Area X to try to find and preserve the gentlest way for it to happen, the safest way for humanity to the best of his abilities. Whitby Allen who as The Rogue only went after those biologists, only attacked them, after they hurt all the rabbits. Whitby who had been there from the start, Whitby who was left behind
i think one of the top things that stuck with me in absolution is how area x is pretty much confirmed to be an aggressive colonizing force that will destroy all life on earth, and yet something has changed it enough that this is the kindest, most merciful, almost loving version of itself in its evolutionary violence; that it is unique not because it's alien, but because it defies its intention enough to be of earth too. the way it leans so deeply into its allegory of climate change in its inevitability of consuming the world, and yet some act of something triggered a best case scenario for life to keep existing at all. both in the conservation allegory and out, that just.... i had to stop reading and take a walk with the mercy in that implication, even in its horror.

The true failing of the current patch is that we, again, entered a giant creature and beat it in the heart until it died, and AGAIN, we did NOT BRING BRAHAM.
I'M SORRY SON, WE'RE A FILTHY LIAR
