I’ve been struggling this past week or two with thoughts that seem to come up in cycles - is what I’m doing actually important? Is there something I could do to better fulfill a purpose in life, something that benefits others, makes me feel more “useful”? (a dangerous word). - It’s strange, this ideal paradoxical way of being - accepting where I am but also realizing there are things I need to do to learn and thrive. And as far as I can tell it’s about avoiding getting bogged down on either side - berating myself for not doing enough or getting complacent. A tough balance to strike, although it seems I’m getting better at weathering the storms, at staying upright and afloat. - Do you ever doubt your purpose, whatever you’re doing? Having finished three abstract placings this week, although my passion hasn’t waned, I am starting to see these more as an entry point rather than an end. - Meaning I’ve dipped my toe in that proverbial river that is never the same river, where the water happens to be running fast, and have been swept along a bit, but can see that things will change and morph and move, and that’s what it’s all about. - For instance: I can see these Abstract Placings having an offshoot into more figurative pieces, maybe made with paint along with objects. A recent purchase of one of my old Abstract Placings sparked something: over the last year, I have been moving away from found objects, and more towards traditional mediums like paint. Key word: traditional. - I realized that as much as I enjoy pure painting, my heart lies in objects and their stories. I’d left them because I thought I needed to create in what was a more “respectable” medium, one that is “taken seriously.” - There are a whole bunch of layers involved in those words, which I’ll leave aside for now, but what I needed was that one flicker of outside interest, to send the fire back deep from my toes. And it feels damn good. —- Please, let me know in the comments below: What are you making because you think you should? What would you create, what would you use, if that voice that says to make respectable things, to be seen as a “real” artist, was suddenly silent?
