BIO
Walburga called them her changeling child; it was an almost tender sentiment, given the generally spiteful way she regarded her sons. It had become apparent at a young age that Regulus was other. They lacked the audacious temperament that characterized the rest of their family; where they were bold, Regulus was restrained, and when they were domineering, Regulus was willing to compromise. In other times, such traits would have been considered failings - fortunately for Regulus, Sirius had preceded them. Their brother was many of the aforementioned things, but never in the ways that their family expected of him. In a home dominated by outbursts and acrimony, their quiet was welcome. So they lurked in Sirius’ shadow, soothing wounds and tempers alike. It didn’t work as often as they would have liked it to. Still, Regulus very quickly learned that they preferred the security of their brother to the relative silence of the house without them.
And so they fashioned themself into a paragon amongst second sons. Quiet and dutiful, they flitted about the pureblood events singing the praises of the more illustrious members of their family and hiding in the crowd when he could. Their worth to the family was not in how brightly he shined, but in how they magnified the light of others. Despite their young age, they learned to be a steadying hand, a cutting smile, or a silent shadow. They were content being forgotten. Unfortunately for them, the mounting tension in the home was making it more difficult to keep out of the limelight. Sirius returning from his first year of Hogwarts had marked a grim paradigm shift. Regulus found their name being brought up more than ever before, used as a means of comparison rather than recognition. It seemed Orion was no longer kind enough to ignore them now that he could weaponize them. It exhausted them. More than anything, they wanted some sort of reconciliation —- or at least some quiet.
Regulus was placed in Slytherin without so much as a moment’s hesitation. Privately, they wondered if Sirius was disappointed. For the rest of their family, it was a source of pride and quiet relief. Still, they hadn’t expected anything else. They knew themself well enough to recognize their character, and it mirrored that of the rest of their family more than they cared to admit. Perhaps it was these similarities that made their transition to their house so easy. As the years went by, they found themself looking forward to the school year more and summers at home less. Despite their relative apathy towards the majority of their peers, Regulus had carved out a place amongst them. At Grimmauld place, they were little more than a ghost.
Whatever peace Regulus had shattered when Sirius left. They would be the first to admit they never thought their brother would actually leave. Growing rift in the family aside, they were taught blood was binding, absolute. Then again, they may have just been naive enough to think their older brother would stay for them. But seemingly all at once, the crushing expectations of their parents and the larger pureblood community fell upon them. Perhaps even more concerning than that was the whispers that followed. It was an awful time to be seen as anything less than steadfastly loyal to the cause. To combat the scrutiny, Regulus offered to take the mark after their sixteenth birthday. It was an odd thing, to be marked so young. Recruitment started early - practically at birth, in some cases - but the mark was a different beast entirely. Still, their request was accepted by the Dark Lord and it was decided they would prove their worthiness by spying in the meantime. At least their parents seemed pleased.
All things considered, Regulus is doing a good job at feigning normalcy. There’s relief to be found in the routine that comes with attending Hogwarts. Still, they’re far from ignorant that a knife looms overhead, ready to drop at the slightest misstep. They’re intent on believing such pressure to be a good thing. While thoughts of a future riddled with arranged marriages and galas eat holes through them, it was a necessary means to an end. There was more at stake than themself. There was a family name, a proud lineage, a history of reverent whisperings of toujours pur. It wasn’t something they would let go to waste.
