Brooke shrugged, looking at the tiny little drive full of incriminating images and videos. It was one of three 16-gig flash drives that was full of them. She turned back to Chloe, having contemplated it for a moment. “You ever heard of mutually assured destruction?” She didn’t wait for an answer. “When the Cold War threatened to get hot, and the US and Soviet Union had nukes pointed at each other, some brilliant asshole coined the term to explain why no one was launching them. No one hates someone so much that they’re willing to go down along with them.” Brooke smiled. “I have five different contingencies, each keyed to a different trigger, and all encrypted to hell. If any one of my clients rats me out, this entire town’s dirty laundry hits the airwaves within forty-eight hours.”

Brooke shrugged again, brushing some stray hairs out of her face, watching the tall punk confronting her carefully. “Bit by bit. Incrementally. No Snowden info dump that’s impossible to sift through. No way to stop it. Just a torrent of incriminating information, with an undercurrent of this place’s corruption.” Brooke made a sweeping gesture towards her window, before prodding Chloe’s shoulder. “And the rat will only have themselves to blame.”
