he’s in his own daydream world as he walks along, hardly paying attention before he feels yuri grab his sleeve, getting his attention in the busy marketplace. he stops in his tracks, turning to blink at his companion, confused as to what was going on.
❛ yuri, what are .. ? ❜ but he looks around to see they’re headed into the nicer part of town. a lifetime ago, neither of them would have dared to step foot near any area of relative wealth. they were thieves, orphans on the street, chased out of any establishment that cared about outward appearances. ashe remembered those days well. he remembered having to hide in the shadows, too afraid to show his face in certain areas. but things were different now.
❛ we deserve to be there just as much as anybody else, yuri. come on, let’s go. ❜

abyss is vast, of course, but it can also be very dark. if the lanterns burn out, it casts the tunnels into almost complete pitch black until they’re lit again. it’s just one of the many disadvantages of living literally underground, but hey, it’s home.
❛ woah, boss, looks like we got a dark one. ❜ he says as he rounds the corner, squinting his eyes to try to see down the unlit path. it would be unwise to walk down a dark tunnel considering how dangerous it could be down there, but it was the right way to get back to town. he’s pondering this when a large crash comes from down the hall, making him jump to attention.
what might be more surprising than the noise was him turning his head to see yuri behind him.
❛ hey, look, boss, it’s just someone trying to light the lantern again. hey, you tryin’ to use me as a human shield or something ? i know i’m big, but come on ! you’re not usually jumpy, everything alright ? ❜

LO AND BEHOLD, the world finds new, though rather predictable, ways to test you. The annoyance flows thick through you, yet you are left no means to express it aside from the way your brow quirks. Your lips are sealed tight for a moment, as they should be. As they ought to be. An extra precaution on your part. One that you know countless to appreciate. Your weight shifts, a hand braced against your hip. Your head tilts, a bit perplexed by the fact that he would issue you such a remark.
“ Who do you take me for? Coco? ‘ Overdoing it ’ isn’t really my style. I mean, I can put up a fight just fine but … I prefer it done rather than dramatized. ” Not to make it out like that’s a bad thing. Her theatrics have proved quite useful many times before. You’re just surprised he would say this to you rather than her.
“ Y’ got nothing to concern —— ” You realize now what he really means. Your voice goes flat. “ Oh. You think I’m gonna wear myself out enough to sigh, huh? Is that it? ”
You envy the rise and fall of people’s chests. You wonder if people know just how much they sigh, how much you want to, how terrible you feel when you do accidentally. It’s hard not to sometimes. Oh, how much you wish they understood. It’s not as easy to control as some might think. You know he doesn’t mean it as a slight, you know it’s because they care about the people here. You do too. Enough to think yourself a danger to everyone that lives here. Do they know that? Maybe you’re reading too much into it. Maybe his care is genuine, for you not to expend yourself, to not get hurt. It’s hard to tell, given you possess an ability so hazardous. You tend to assume the worst. It’s easier that way.
It is hard not to get defensive. To feel tense. To not to let anger rise up from within you. Although it hardly qualifies as anger anymore, you’re just tired. You wish you didn’t have to live like this, monitoring something as constant as breathing, something that oftentimes isn’t even noticed. Discontentment seethes until you can no longer ignore it.
“ Get in line then. There’s gotta be at least a hundred people that feel the same way by now. I worry enough about it on my own, Yuri-bird. I keep the best eye on it as I can. ” That’s all you can do, really. Lest the world would rather remove your lungs and rid it of what harm you’ve the chance to bring.
