Grief.
Ace couldn't handle this... feeling. He's never felt this way before. He couldn't imagine ever healing from it. After the accident, after losing Masa... all the tanks of diverse fish they've caught on their fishing trips hurt to look at. He couldn't even think of them without thinking about how the love of his life was lost at sea, never to be seen again. He couldn't save Masa. He... could have saved Masa? He should have saved Masa. Why did he freeze up?? What was he thinking? He couldn't even look at a boat after that. Much less those fish.
Now, his pockets were filled with fish. He walked to the sea, and one by one, he painfully released them. Releasing the fish most dear to him felt like burning a memory and watching it disappear as it melted into the fire. Ace always released the fish he caught after some time - he always feels bad fishing them up. But it was never like this. This was different. The fish couldn't bring him comfort, but neither could releasing them. He just felt... empty. Empty and depressed.
What does a bird do when on the verge of tears for what seemed like the hundredth time today? Remodel! If he took away the thing that gave his house the spirit it had, he'll just remodel the whole thing!
If you felt the way Ace was feeling at this very moment, what color would you describe this feeling to be? A sad low-saturated blue? Empty void black? A fecal shade of brown, perhaps to emphasize how shitty the feeling is? Well, Ace thought none of those things. Ace thought... green?? Maybe it was because green symbolized nature or healing; or perhaps it reminded him of the soft moss on a rock found in Masa's home. But no matter the reason, the intense urge to greenify everything was unable to be fought off. Green walls. Green furniture. Leave those fish in the past and turn to GREENIFICATION.
Ace is still feeling immense grief because yeahhh
